Chapter 6+7 problems/glitches!

I'm playing BG1 for the first time, and I'm having some serious glitches. After I cleared out the Iron Thrones tower in chapter 5, I went back to talk to scar, and he wasn't there. I couldn't go up to see the Duke either, so I was stuck. I looked in DSimpson's faq, and saw that I had to go to candlekeep, so I went, and tried to get the guard to let me in. Even though I had the history book from Duke Eltan (I pick pocketed it before going to clear out the iron throne) he told me I had no rare tome and couldn't be admitted. So in the end, I decided to cheat to teleport into candlekeep.
I completed candlekeep, and when I left the catacombs, chapter 7 started. I went to BG and nothing happened. Scar isn't there, I can't go into duke Eltan's room, and no events occur anywhere. I read that the Flaming fist should arrest me, but they don't care, and I went into the dock district, and nothing happened. I even went into the iron throne tower, and no new events occured.
I really want to finish the game, but I don't see any way I possibly could. Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

BTW: I'm playing on the Original saga version, with no mods.

I suppose you collected all the documents in Iron Throne building.

Scar should be there. Either in Flaming Fist building or in front of it. Duke Eltan should be upstairs in his garret.
And you should have not stolen the book from Eltan. If you complete the quests properly, he will give you the book and your party will automatically appear in Candlekeep.

Cheat is useless. Of course nothing is working properly for you because the game's Global variables weren't updated. So cheat is useless if you try to advance in the main plot.

 

Well, it turns out there was a glitch, but it was minor. Scar did vanish for some reason, but I was never banned from Eltan's staircase. I just didn't notice it in the corner, and I assumed it must be behind the back doors, which I now know are inaccessible becasue of your later capture. I went up, talked to eltan, and had him teleport me to candlekeep, thus starting chapter 6 while I was in chapter 7, and then the chapter 7 story picked up when I entered BG.

I stole the book from him on my first run too, but was savvy enough to know I had to talk to him to "trip the flag" to get the next chapter rolling.

I had to see if it could be done.

 

If you steal the book, leave the city and head to Candlekeep does it let you in? I have to admit I've never thought about stealing the book because I'm such a non-thieving person at heart.

 

Cheat teleport into the city? I thought you would be killed then by the magical runes?

 

According to Tethtoril, and the game, yes. But I don't think it works actually.(Usually developers don't prepare the program towards cheating players, which is understandable) Do you have any evidence that can prove that?

 

I didn't cheat to cheat, I cheated because I thought I'd have to restart the game to see the ending, and I simply didn't have the time to do that. And I stole the book from Lord Eltan, because I like trying to pickpocket any named characters, to see what they have.

And regarding the realism of teleporting in, if the game was really designed to account for all ingame possibilites, then I shouldn't have had to teleport, because the guard rightfully should have accepted the stolen book.

I'm just curious here. Does anyone else have trouble seeing those spiraling staircases? Through the game I could never really spot them.

 

At first, maybe. But after that, I have never had serious problems with those.

 

In my game (Lasest up to date US version):

I pick-pocketed the book and went back down south to finish up the over-world map before heading to chapter 6. I stopped by CandleKeep and the dialog option to give him the book wasn't available even though I had it in my inventory. The dialog option appeared after teleporting there to start chapter 6 later.

btw- I didn't try to get the book back after chapter 6 since I was a goody-goody Paladin. I wonder how much that book would sell for?

 

It only sells for 3 gold. . . I had nothing better to do with it than sell it.

 

I thought it was a 5000gp book or something like that.

 

All I can think of is that 5000 gold was the price of the identified item.

 

I had identified the book immeadiatly after stealing it. I sold the book with a reputation of 16, and the lead party member for the transaction had a charisma of 20. I sold the book at the sorcerous sundries, after starting chaoter 7, so it's possible that the books value drops after its supposed to have been given to the guard at candlekeep. . .

 

I'm not sure though. Maybe Aces confused it with a Tome or Manual, which have very high price.

 

It's suppose to be a very rare and expensive book.
I just mentioned 5000gp as a round figure.

 

To get into Candlekeep, you have to give a book of at least 5000 gp. That's the "entry fee". Puff-Guts mentions it the first time you click on him. At the beginning of the game, he's joking that it applies to you. You live there.

 

I thought I read in a guide or read in a dialog in the game somewhere something like that.

That's why I had that 5000gp figure in the back of my mind!
