Would it be safe to lower intelligence really low, below 5, for my half orc barbarian?

If im not mistaken, intelligence is only useful to spell users and doesnt assist in saving throws. This is my first time playing BGII, so want to know before I commit to a character

will it effect dialogue options or anything?

As far as I can remember, there is only one dialogue in the entire game that it affects, and even then it is just a minor change that has no major effect on anything.

The one thing about intelligence that is useful for a barbarian is allows you to survive mindflayer intelligence draining attacks for a bit longer. There aren't a ton of mind flayers in the game, though, so you could always just use intelligence raising potions when you are facing them.

Also, intelligence will affect your lore IIRC, but since you are a barbarian your lore score will be extremely low anyways, so this doesn't matter.

Try rerolling a few times -- look for totals in the 80's or 90's. Your character is the offspring of a god -- he/she should have at least decent stats (I don't like to use anything below 10 unless it's for roleplaying purposes).

Int is nearly useless, wis is totally useless.
You won't feel a difference at all whether you have 1 or 18 wis, so before dumping int you should dump wis first, so you only need an average roll for 6-7 int and even more than 10 isn't too hard to get with maximized str, dex, con and cha.
If you want to use a bad roll for character creation minimizing wis and int is definitely better than lowering physical stats.

...aaand this is almost obligatory to post in every thread about stats: There's a lot of potions that'll boost up the stats for specific purposes.

But if you might have a mage or especially wild mage around, then on an occasion a warrior might find wis of 18 pretty useful, so that he'd know to be careful what to wish for...
