Sorry, haven't enough time to do this justice so I'll just open it as a talking point. In a nutshell, the Indianapolis GenCon raised $17,000 to donate to Gary Gygax's favorite charity (A religious charity raising money for children). Said charity appears to have refused the money due to the fact that the money was raised partly by the sales of Dungeons and Dragons materials. Isn't it just a little disapointing that religion seems to attract the most narrow-minded of individuals and then promotes them to positions of responsibility.

Those people may are so stupid, they are on a par with politicians! I'm religious but I don't think my eternal soul is going to br damned by playing RPG's. It amazes me that these people would rather let the kids starve than accept the money!

Yeah, I was some POd when I read that a few days ago. There's such a thing as standing for principles and such a thing as being a sanctimonious butthole, and the charity chose the latter, I believe. More from me on this later.

Hey guys, let's all become Satanists because we play D&D. Sound like a good idea? Cool. I'll get the candles and draw the pentagrams, you can kidnap the virgin sacrifice.

Ok, Shoshino, there's a difference between religious, sanctimonious, and just plain nuts. I'm the first, the charity is the second, and Tal's video is the third. Tal, where in all of holy creation did you find that?

Is she using darksided as an adjective and a verb?

    'cause that's awesome.

The Christian lady looks far more evil/poessesed than the "darksided" lady.

Wait, that sounds a little strange. If they are such fundamentalists, how did they get to be Gygax' favourite charity? Chances are that he donated - how do they think he got the money?

As a Gamer and a Christian, I'm offended at the decision made by the CCF. Shouldn't the priority be on helping the starving children? Further, this was short sighted, as you've told a segment of the population that their money is no good. I for one will donate any time and funds I can spare to a less picky cause...

This has come up on the WotC board as well. One suggestion is that they feared that larger donors would balk at a perceived association of their name with GenCon and withhold future donations. Another theory is that GenCon didn't ask first, and just said that this year they would donate to CCF, Gygax's favourite charity, and thus CCF could not accept.

I've written both of these off as lame...

That woman has a myspace comedy page... incredible.

On topic: I find it ridiculous that they would reject the contribution. Get your priorities straight.

Huh? What's the big deal? Religious charities don't deserve external contributions anyway...they extort their own members enough to get by. I say the $17,000 should be put to a better charity...like one that brings RPGs to 3rd world countries or the like. :D

Oh, and that crazy christian lady needs to be shot... :thumb: :rolling:

I have to say I admire their integrity and sticking to their beliefs. Even though I don't agree with them.

But if a charity refused a donation from me, I would simply shrug and give the money to a different charity. Maybe not one that sends RPGs to 3rd world countries (sorry, Kit!), but I might even try to find one that would irritate the first one. ;) So what do they expect to get out of this, publicity?

Just absurd and sad. I thought that the "ROLEPLAYING GAMES MAKE YOU SACRIFICE TO SATAN AND KILL BABIES!" -screaming had already died down, but apparently there are people who still believe in that strongly enough to reject large sums of money meant not for them, but for starving children.

Were I doing charity work like that, I don't think that I could turn down a donation, even if it came from a group I dislike. Seeing that the money isn't for me, but for people in need, I don't think I even have the right to turn it down.

Of course, when you are talking about virgins and D&D, they tend to be male. :D

    Only outside of the...

Hmm, to be honest, the PbPs and chat games I've been in have had very little sexual content, from romancing to brothels. I guess the D&D libido overcompensation theory is a little exaggerated.

There's more to taking donations than just money and sometimes by accepting the money you would condone the ways of raising it. While I wouldn't reject D&D donations, I wouldn't take money raised from, say, exclusively the sale of 18+ rated source books about evil characters, necromancy and the like. The charity apparently didn't approve of Dungeons & Dragons as a whole, not just some things you can do within it, so it did not accept the donations. While I do not agree with their decision, I think you guys could look at it with a bit more calm.
