Ok, this isn't like 1.6 trillion other threads. I'm not talking about the social/political ramifications of cheating.

I'm talking about the actual process of cheating.

I have a disassembler, a hex editor, a memory poker, and a text editor. I'm trying to find a value in a game for 'gold', but I can't seem to find the value anywhere. I'll do an initial search, and find quite a few entries, but when I change the value and research, nothing pops back up. In short, I cannot find the value i'm looking for in memory. I'm starting to suspect foul play (i.e. programmers put some encryption or dynamic allocation in there).

I've disassembled the executable (which is *the* only file; the rest are valid media files only), but I can't seem to hunt down what I'm looking for in the 540k assembler file.

    Any ideas/clues?

[IMG] Say what? All I understood was that you've got some 540k file and you don't know what to look for in that file. Am I right? Probably not huh? Would you mind saying all that again - in english ?

Well, when I saw the subject line, I wasn't totally sure what kind of cheating this topic would be about.

Anyway, I actually do my hex editing using a C++ compiler, not a hex editor. Have you tried checking the Internet for information about the hexes? The only other thing I could tell you would be to do trial and error, but it appears that you have already done that.

I agree, tell us what game you're talking about and maybe I can dig out a guide sitting on one of my computers.

The only game I ever hacked on for fun was "The Bard's Tale". Basically I edited the savegame file and looked for values I knew from the character sheet (Str, Dex, gold etc.). Then I'd edit the values in the savegame file and see if the change was reflected upon reloading it.

Then once I found the item slots, I could just put in all the possible values and find out what all the items in the game were... etc.

Thanks everyone. I found out it was my memory poker. That thing needs to be shot, gutted, run over, urinated on, burned, irradiated, shredded, and dispersed at sea. I can't believe I wasted valuable sleep time last night on it.

Rastor, you use visual studio to debug with? That's what my EE geek friend told me today, right before he told me that poker sucked. The new one he gave me works, and it's good to go. There's like, a slim-chance-in-avoreen that I might go pickup VS6. It's like all other msft stuff; well worth the $15 at the campus computer store. :p

So, bottom line: I'm ready for Icewind Dale 2.

    [IMG] BTA!

Are you the man behind the archmage Spaceballs? who delivered 255 blows of -1000 damage?

If you are, that would be a miracle. a file which made it all the way from US to the little incignificant island Bornholm. Where Spaceballs went on killing sprees on my computer.

I know this is sort of off-topic, but I must say this:

You know you are an irrevocable cheater when you start to think if there is a way of cheating in computerized Solitaire.

    I think she's right.

I also think that Free Cell deals a Kobayashi Maru every 15-20 games or so.

And in the Expert version of minesweeper, there is *always* at least *one* instance when you have to guess.

I think we need to give Olly Stone a call..
