Chinese Names in the game

    The following was copied from the BG2 and ToB Item Listing document by Dan Simpson

    HELM34 - Wong Fei's Ioun Stone (Throne of Bhaal)

    This Ioun Stone was said to be a gift given to the Shou-ling monk, Wong Fei
    Hung by the Kara Turan god of war, Chan Cheng. The god came down in the form
    of a dragon and fought Wong Fei for three days and three nights. Chan Cheng
    was so impressed by the monk's prowess that he bestowed the Ioun Stone upon
    him. The stone disappeared when Wong Fei died.


    I'm a Chinese from Malaysia. I found that western people always got confused with Chinese names, just like we're confused with 'first name' and 'last name' of western people.

    In the case above, Wong Fei Hung, the surname is actually 'Wong', while 'Fei Hung' is the given name. So we call the guy 'Fei Hung', or by surname 'Wong' / 'Mr. Wong', but now 'Wong Fei'.

    Another thing: In the text, I suppose the name 'Wong Fei Hung' means the kung-fu master in the Jet Li movie series 'Once Upon a time in China'. However he was not a Shou-Ling monk. Also I don't know who is 'Chan Cheng'. Any idea about it?

    Just pointing out this one to share with our western friends. :)

    Perhaps Bioware meant a "Shaolin" monk?

    exactly they meant ShaoLin. But as far as I know (from movies and stories), Wong Fei Hung was never a ShaoLin monk.

    In fact, China had standardize the Chinese English translation using a system known as Hanyu Pinyin.

    For example, the capital of China is now known as Beijing, no more Peking.

    The translation used in the text above is Cantonese. Maybe the text editor got the name from the movies! :p

    It also kind of bugs me that Kara-Tur is used as an umbrella designation for a unified eastern culture. It seems as if the game can't decide whether Kara-Tur is China or Japan. While you have references to Wong Fei Hung, you also have elements of Japanese culture, like ... Yoshimo, katanas and wakizashis. I'm surprised that they didn't throw in any crappy Chinese broadswords.
