Christmas and Hindu's advice?

    A young Hindu family has moved nextdoor to me a few months ago and they have 2 young children (under 10 years of age). First of all I wanted to know if it would be acceptable to give (secular) presents? I am worried that I may cause offense if I do nothing (they may think they are unwelcome or being ignored), or they may find it rude if I gave the 'wrong' type of present.

    If it is okay to give a wee something for Christmas, what do you all think would be a good present?

    If you're presenting the gifts as a sort of "welcome to the neighborhood" gesture, I don't think a reasonable person would take offense. You could also use it as a chance to learn something about Hinduism, if you're so inclined!

    As for the gift itself... coloring books and crayons, or other types of art materials are pretty universal, IMO.

    I don't see how they could be offended by you practicing your religious and social beliefs via giving them gifts. "It's common in our culture to celebrate Christmas by giving others gifts. I don't demand or expect you to return the gift in kind, it's simply our way of celebrating this time of year."

    I've just been in Thailand, a muslim, bhudist, hindu and christian nation and they all celebrate Christmas and none are offended when recieving a gift. I dare say they're quite happy to recieve one.

    If you are religious yourself, you may as well say it's the custom in (but hardly "of" ;) , because it's not religious per se) your religion to give presents to other people. I doubt you'd be offended if they were to give you some gifts on a Hindu holiday and I surely wouldn't be, Catholic as I am. ;) There's no need to reduce Christmas to a December gifts obsession-compulsion, as in "Season Holidays" or "Winter Holidays" or whatever. Christmas is Christmas and gifts are a nice tradition. ;)
