Classic gaming -- Hang On for Sega Master System

    As promised, here is the first official Master System game review!

    This review, as the title says, will be about HANG ON, which is a TERRIFIC game for the Master System, and the game that came with my Master System. The cartridge also packs Safari Hunt, though unfortunately I do not have the light gun (yet) so this review will have to be postponed.

    Back to Hang On, though... this is a racing game, motorcycle racing. The concept is straightforward enough, reach the next checkpoint before running out of time... and beware the other bikers on the road, as they can REALLY be a royal pain in the rear end when trying to negotiate a stiff turn.

    If there's one bad thing I can say about Hang On, it's the controls. Gears must be shifted manually using up or down on the D-Pad, and steering with left/right, of course. Button 2 is gas. Now, this sounds fine on paper, but when actually playing, the fact that UP and DOWN on the D-Pad upshifts/downshifts becomes a problem when dealing with a stiff turn, like I said... often in the heat of the moment I ended up downshifting, which in turn cost me time since every gear is limited to a maximum speed. BUT, the downshifting redeems itself when dealing with stiff turns, because downshifting stops the screeching who can lead to accidents if one is too reckless.

    IMO, shifting gears should have been assigned to button 1 and 2, down and up respectively. Gas should have been up on the D-Pad, brake down. The Master System controller has a superb 8-way D-Pad which could have handled this kind of setup just fine.

    Graphics on the game are fairly basic and alternates between 4 different backgrounds. All races use the same backgrounds, which kind of sucks, but playing with someone else and trying to get the best score in the spirit of competition truly makes this game shine, IMO. I spent a complete afternoon playing this game with a friend of mine, and time flew by insanely quickly.

    The controls are a minor gripe, and by far not enough to give me second thoughts about recommending this game. Racing game fans who own a Master System should definitively check this game out. It's affordable, fun and challenging.
