Did this spell (Hold) work against someone who is wearing the cloak? In my case, it was Edwin, and the caster Balor, the demon from Underdark.
This cloak it suppose to return every spell to his caster, isn't it?

Read the info about the cloak (right clink on it)

    You will read this:

Special Abilities: Reflects all spell damage back to the source. This includes offensive spells like Magic Missile, but not disabling (non-damage spells) such as hold person

the receipe to withstand spells like hold or stun is to have a very good saving throw vs. spells - for example by playing a good and *wise* (wis-18 gives +4 on st vs. spells) fighter of dwarven or halfling race with a ring of protection for example ;)

The Ring of Free Action, or the spell of the same name will also protect you from the effects of Hold Person.

Yes Ring of Free Action is great against combating Hold spells, but not necessarily being stunned. My character had Ring of Free Action on but still was stunned with Power Word Stun. You get it from Spellhold along with Ring of Regeneration. Two great rings in one great place. Hopefully you didn't miss it since you're fighting Balor in the Underdark. So put that cloak away for now and get out that ring ;)

The ring of free action is a nice thing but not essential.

I chose the halfling race for cavalier for the promising saving throws. It was kind of annoying (though absolutely natural ;) ) that my previous human chars all got stunned or charmed (by umberhulks/ ithillids and so on) several times during the game. I disliked that and wanted a change. After my halfling cavalier reached lvl-13 iirc he was neither stunned nor held or charmend for the rest of the game due to his impressive saving throws.

Since he, as a paladin, just got a +2 on all his saving throws, I think that the difference between him and an ordinary halfling or dwarven fighter (both do get the same saving throws) is quite small - give him a ring of protection +2 and they will be equal. So IMHO high wisdom is a good investment even for non cleric-chars.

    [IMG] Ragusa,
You might just convert me into a halfling maniac yet.

Balor's hold is not a spell, but a gaze attack, which, methinks, does damage along with holding. So the effect of the cloak of mirrors might be diferent.

And another thing about the Ring of Free Action, if I remember correctly it also protects you against the Illithids psiconics.

No, it just protects you from the hold effect of illithids' psionics, which is spell-like :)
