Okay... for once, there is a thread about idiocy and it isn't about America... I think the world will end quite soon. Instead, it happened in Finland....

Our History teacher told us today, that she might have to keep us in class for the full 75 minutesd from now on, instead of letting us go when we're done with the lesson, which is usually 5-10 minutes early.

    Why?

Because some parents have called the principal and complained about it! Apparently some people have mentioned at home that they have been let off early, and their parents have started complaining!

Where is this world coming to? Slaving around the clock has nothing to do with efficency, and my, this is, imho, incredibly stupid!

And the worst part? I have a nasty feeling that my mother has been one of those who have called... I am pretty sure of that. I just hate life....

    Opinions, anyone?

    That's...dumb...sort of.
But I think I know why the parents are complaning, even though they kinda overdid it. They want their kids to learn and stuff, but this is a bit too much.

    Just my 2cents.

Find out who did it and don't let them live :)

This is indeed stupidity, but you'll discover that parents do more stupid things then this. Maybe it has to do with their youth, when they where on school they never could go away from a class earlier then when the class officialy would end... so they think it is stupid and start complaining.... Perhaps they are just stupid and say: we paid for 75 minutes and not for 65...

Anyway, school has a schedule and as long as you are still on that schedule, then why should you just let them stay until the end of the lesson when it means you just have 10 minutes long nothing to do, or you can work on but have the last 2 weeks nothing to do anymore because you completed the whole schedule for the year....

Parents..... you'll never understand them. Just try not to become like them later :)

[IMG] Well, I'm not a parent... yet. But since my mom and dad have both passed away, I have been both big brother and parent to my younger sister (I'm 27 and she's 16.)

I'm not that old, and yes, as a student (I'm a working student), I do see the hassle of having to stay in a classroom longer than what seems to me is necessary.

But as someone who also works and pays for my sister's schooling (and I just don't mean her school fees, but her lunch money, her books, her going out with her friends on weekends, and whatever 16 year old do these days), I worry about her learning and getting the right education. The money I pay the school is HARD EARNED. I am not a rich man. So, as someone who puts money into the school system, I want to make sure that I get my money's worth, that if X amount of money entitles my sister for X amount of minutes per subject, then she gets the entire X amount of minutes I pay for, every year.

Just to give the others of what the parents mentioned in the article(?) might have been thinking of.

Well, you see, I didn't mention it but here in FInland, nearly all schools are public and have no fees. We don't pay for either teaching or lunch.

Well, you don't *directly* pay for schooling, but the tax system is what pays for it in the end.

From a student's perspective, yeah it's a pain to be there that much longer. But, as already stated, some parents will always figure that they aren't getting their money's worth unless every minute is used up ;) And there might be some truth to that. For argument's sake, although the lesson itself might be completed with 5-10 minutes to spare, those 5-10 minutes could be used by the teacher for review or something. But from my experience time isn't the most important factor - quality of the teaching is, which doesn't necessarily mean being able to get through a 75 minute lesson in 65 minutes. It's what you get out of the time spent.

Something else to consider, is that if this is happening at the end of the day, that means some students are going home early (albeit by a few minutes). For younger students, that could mean a young kid by themselves without supervision, which might erk some parents. I also know of some people who look at the school system as glorified day care - the longer their kid is at school, the less time the parent has to deal with them.

Who knows. It's not fun for the students, but there's probably some good intentions in there somewhere ;) Doesn't mean they're necessarily right though.

[IMG] You know, clock-slaving is not a way of life; as a matter of fact, it's realted to unnerving levels of stress that drive people nuts (AND it's a FACT, proved by SCIENCE; not just rambling) and it's IMHO a way of killing someone... slowly.

It's slaving, it's frustrating and it's definetly NOT amongst the Human Rights.

The kids shouldn't have told their parents, but it's tight that the parents moaned! :flaming: :(

Well, this is not anything major or anything like that, but it sure as hell doesn't mess with my chat time :p

Besides, the history teacher has already forgotten even talking about it... she's cool.
