Computer Careers in AD&D

Was just thinking of something just now, imagine if you assembled a team of people skilled in computer science to tackle the world. These are the classes I came up with.

Code Monkey
Hacks at code with unrelenting fury until it gives way and does what he wants. No finesse in coding, he just tries everything until it works.
Advantages: More hitpoints per level than any other character.
Disadvantages: May not become more than proficient in any one language.
AD&D Counterpart: Barbarian.

Algorithmist
A finesse coder, thinks of intelligent solutions to problems but usually isnt a very good coder. Can do lots of damage with a single line of code but doesnt do it very often.
Advantages: Bonus to Thaco and Damage every level.
Disadvantages: Gains weapon proficiencies slower than other characters.
AD&D Counterpart: Kensai.

Network Administrator
Concerned with balance of things and making sure that no-one downloads too much stuff, even those people he regards as friends. Servers and routers regard him as their friend and treat him kindly whereever he goes.
Advantages: Can take control of servers and routers easily.
Disadvantages: Can not become more than specialized in any language.
AD&D Counterpart: Druid.

Coffee guy
Always fetches hot coffee for those in need. Excellent conversationalist and provides good opportunities to waste time at work, therefore essential to any party. Rescues those who have worked too much and destroyed their brains.
Advantages: Can help party members nicely.
Disadvantages: Dont bring him anywhere near a computer.
AD&D Counterpart: Cleric.

Hacker
Always thinking of new and destructive ways to destroy anyone, even his friends (of which there are few). Languages are but a tool to deliver mass destruction, he commands some of them depending on his level, newbie hackers invariably use the tools developed by others whereas high level hackers need no tools.
Advantages: Can destroy his opponents with the right tool.
Disadvantages: Can get arrested just as easily, especially at lower levels.
AD&D Counterpart: Mage.

Aye. The hacker is more of a thief character.

 

Nah, Mel was a true hacker, everyone else after him was a faker.. well him or the guy who put a police vehicle on the dome of the MIT overnight.
But the idea that hackers are computerly people who believe in free information is a load of crock, just as bs as the idea that hackers crack machines with malicious intent.

Back on topic, I think I would be an algorithmist. Always trying to write top-code and cutting through dense uncommented code like a blade

I think I am an Algorithmist/Code Monkey but far more levels in Algorithmist.

Deity: CTRL+C & CTRL + V (very useful when writing similar code snippets)

 

Algorithmist, I guess. I always take less lines than "professionals" do and I use solutions that make those shiver (because it's so completely not meant to be coded like that), plus my variable names are almost always obscure and sometimes offensive. But probably some Code Monkey levels. After all, I converted all the Neverwinter Nights pages on Sorcerer's Place from old code format to new code format in one evening. Have any Drunken Muster equivalent? Sometimes I can't figure out my own code after I sober up and it's time to update.

 

I'm a master of one of the greatest aspects of computer science: coffee. That was the reason I became a computer scientist in the first place.

Ok, perhaps I'm a multi classed Coffee Guy/Code Monkey. I can write programmes, but I use the crash test approach when programming: try something, if it doesn't work try something else, and be perplexed if it finally does work. Don't think about what you're going to programming for too long, because most of your thoughts aren't going to work in the first place.

Hacker, cracker whatever.

No I dont really know what they mean, the profession doesnt interest me much.

I was a code monkey that dualled to an algorithmist fairly early.

 

Tech Supoprt Guy:
A character who's a Jack of All Trades, knowing a bit of every part of the computing world, yet being master of none. They develop the uncanny ability to use the tools developed by others even without having the necessary preparation or study. Some skilled individuals can simply bluff their way out of any situation, without knowing what they're talking about. They can also use a song that stuns their opponents, putting them 'on hold'.
AD&D counterpart: Bard

 

Net Entrepeneur
Creates devilish websites designed to ensnare unsuspecting victims. Hides behind PHP, J2EE or .NET layers, therefore not vulnerable to any attack except hackers of level 20 and higher, or brute force physical attack should his location be divined.
Special Ability: Create pornography website. All male computer surfers must make a save vs will at -10 or be held for a number of days equal to their credit card balance /10.
AD&D Counterpart: Thief/Necromancer.
