Computer specs for TTOEE & NWN

I currently own 2 PC:
- Duron 800, 384 Mb RAM, TNT2M64, W98SE
The TNT2M64 was a cheap TNT2, not as good as a TNT1 ultra. It has 32 Mb slow RAM.
- P4 3.0c, 1 Gb RAM, Radeon 7000 64 Mb, XP
The Radeon 7000 was also a cheap card (I took it for it's DVI output)

I run BG1, BG2 and IWD on the Duron 800, with no problem.

Yesterday, I acquired some other games:
- Neverwinter Nights & expansion
- The Temple of Elemental Evil
The recommended specs are clearly above those of BG2.
Will the duron still be OK, esp. with TTOEE, which lists P3 700 as minimum?

Oh! I also got Colin McRae Rally 3, the radeon 7000 is not on the list of supported 3D cards (it begins at 8500LE). Will the game still run on the P4?

 

I doubt you'll run ToEE on the first one but perhaps it doesn't require a high version of hardware DirectX support to run. I played ToEE on a similar setup but with a better GFX card (GF2Ti) and less RAM than you have. Everything was nice except the end-of-turn periods making the game barely playable. If NWN runs, it's going to be low res and low quality. On a Celeron 2.4 GHz with 512 MB RAM and a TNT2M64, I was able to get 800*600 and 32 bit colour. I had to turn many options off and it still stuttered from time to time.

The second PC should be able to handle both. Radeon 7000 is probably newer than NWN and shouldn't have any problem with what ToEE has to offer.

Duron will be OK with the P3 700 requirement, not much difference there. I'm not sure if Colin McRae Rally will run on the P4 if the card is not on the list. Perhaps it will run without the most flashy options, perhaps it won't even launch because the game will refuse to run upon detecting your hardware (some games do this, which sucks).

As an off-topic note, I suggest putting the Radeon 7000 in the Duron machine and getting a new card for the Pentium 4 one. Read a couple of latest graphics card topics in the Techno-magic forum if you're interested.

 

Thanks for your answer, chevalier. Apparently, the Duron won't be enough: If you had problems with a celeron 2.4 or a GF2, my setup is in the red zone.
I'm surprised NWN requires so much though.

There is a major incompatibility between the Radeon 7000 and my duron machine, probably due to the motherboard, Abit KT7A, that's the reason I upgraded to P4! The damn shop wouldn't take back the Radeon that I had bought for the duron... So I shelled out more euros (but in another shop!)
I don't know if I want to upgrade the card, one of the advantages of the Radeon 7000 is that it's totally silent, and I try to have a quiet computer.

As for Colin McRae Rally 3, that's precisely the question I'm asking myself. But for this one, I'll do my research on the net. Thanks again.

 

NWN will run on low end machines. It's just you aren't going to get much more than raw polygons in a mediocre resolution. But you'll still be able to play the game and I remember times where top notch graphics was nowhere near to low res NWN.

If you want a silent card and you like RadeOns, watch out for Gigabyte stuff. They are more silent than others. MSI GeForces are also quiet.
