I can tell what shoul happen.
When you cast it from a scroll and then designates a target where the familiar shall be summoned, it should appear.

Though I dont know if this apply for a sorcerer as well (though I would think so).

[IMG] Familiars usually are useless, I think. If one dies you lose 1 point of constitution, it isn't worth!

You should be able to cast it from a scroll (that's how you should cast it anyway, not worth learning, if you're a mage that is). But you're a sorceror so you cast from the scroll and it should work, but the catch is he/she has to be the leader, only the leader can cast Find Familiar and it work.

I agree that familiars are not really worth it. Howver, some peolpe feel the extra hp are good for a mage/sorcerer and some familiars have a few useful skills. Anyway, I'll posts links to some debates on the pros and cons, so you can decided. As to actuallly learning the spell, always cast from a scroll (it is a huge waste of a memorised slot as you only cast it once a game) and remember only your main character can have one. The only reason I can think of for it failing in your case is if you are playing a multiplayer party with more than one character created by you. The familiar spell only works for the main character, in multiplayer, the one created first. If you are playing a multiplayer type game, it might be worth trying to move your sorcerer to the top slot at the head of the group and casting from there (but I doubt that will work either).

I'm assuming of course that it was nothing simple, like being interupted during casting or failing the spell or something.

    Anyway, links:

[IMG] HOW CAN YOU SAY THEY AREN'T WORHTIT!?

If you summon one, you get the extra +12 HP. Just stuff it in your backpack and it wont get killed. 12 extra HP are A LOT for a mage!

    [IMG] Lokken

You just stole words from my mouth

    ;)

Another thing - familiars are somehow buggy, bugs they inflict can be avoided by placing them in inventory.

    Familiars rule!

ok, so i'll try to move him to the top slot. It was a mp game, so i guess that would be a problem.

As a fiery supporter of clerical and wizardly magic, I shall say that every wizard has to have a familiar to be a 'real' wizard...
As a chaotic good supporter of magic, I'd say that the ability of my Feryntenimar The Fairy Dragon (Where'd i get this? :)) comes handy sometimes.
As a supporter of magic that has a constitution of 14 I say that the hit points that my Lil' dragon gives me sometimes are lifesaving
As a lone wolf, I'd say that familiar is just fun for roleplaying, I just wish they'd let me edit the character of my familiar in NWN :)

The neutral familiars are pretty useless really. I would rather have the extra spot in my inventory than the extra hitpoints but then thats just me. They familiar that can cast invisibility 10ft radius is pretty useful.(which dragon is it? the fairy or the psuedo?)

'Tis my trusted fairy dragon, a chaotic good one.
If neutral familiars could progress in skills and disarm traps they would make an excellent companion for soloing wizards (the main problem with solo - ye'd need a thief) but for some reason BW could not let us, users of the arcane, enjoy such a pleasure :(

The neutral good also get the fairy dragon. The imp isn't bad either, with the polymorph self spell they can make good hand to hand fighters in a pinch.
