New to computer gaming. Just received Icewind Dale 2 and tried to load it into the computer but it crashes when I get to Appearances section. I have downloaded Patch 2.01. Looking for suggestions on how to fix this or what patch to download.

Also, what is the meaning of the little buttons next to the categories in the Feats section? Some feats don't have any buttons, while other have as many as four or five. Some look like the are colored green (not activated) others are colored gold (activated) I'm guessing here. Could not find an explanation in the book. Font size not for old eyes.

If this is number one, only nine more to go

[IMG] Hi, this should be in the Icewind Dale 2 forum, this is Whatnots which is for general discussions outside of the IE games. I'll notify someone to put it in the right place for you :)

Do you get a message when the game crashes or does it just go to the desktop without any warning?

Some feats you can take multiple times - such as Toughness, each time you take it you gain 3hp, and the game lets you take it up for five times so you can get up to 15 bonus hit points. Weapon feats tend to give different bonuses at each level. These are what the little buttons mean :)

Some will be greyed out if you cannot take them - I don't think they are green tinted but I can't check at the moment - I will install the game as soon as possible to check but I might be a while before I can get home :o

Information on the rules used in IWD2 can be found at this site which gives information on the pen and paper version of the rules - remember a lot of the rules would have to be alterred slightly because computers can only interpret rules in limited ways.

Also, what are your computer specs and operating system?

The Infinity Engine that IWD2 uses is relatively old now so there might be a bit of tweaking needed to get it to run happily. (Don't worry - it's not impossible!)

Many thanks for setting me straight on the right track, forum wise. Could you please give me a link to that forum; I'm have trouble locating it. And many thanks for trying to help solve the computer crash problem.

The game crashes to the desktop; no messages, no warnings. Screen goes black and then the desktop appears.

I do hope this is the information you are asking for.

[IMG] I tried to post about your crash problem yesterday, but my internet was acting up:(. Go to the config program in your game folder, run it, and alter the graphics settings. I never remember exactly what must be altered (was it 'disable... something?'), but fiddling around there always fixes the crash problem for people. It's quite an old issue, due to your video card compatibility... Hope that helps!

Coin is probably right and running the configuration program will help.

Anyway, here are a few links from SP if you haven't checked them yet they should prove quite informative and get you started with the game:

Don't forget that you can access some very helpful information in game (things like feats, classes, orders, etc.) some game principles may seem a bit complicated at first (depending whether or not you're familiar with pen and paper D&D and the third edition on which IWD2 is based -check the link 8people posted if you need more information but bear in mind that it goes in more detail than what is needed to play IWD2).

Hopefully you'll be able to solve your problem and enjoy the game. ;)

Open "C: program files/Black Isle/Icewind Dale 2" folder and look for a "config.exe" run it and you will get a number of tabs, some of which allow you to change game parameters and others will allow you to test the display.

I don't have the game on my computer at the moment or I would have uploaded pictures, I don't know how to explain this any better.

Many thanks Caradhras. I found the correct folders/files and will play around with the settings to see if I can get it to play.

You're welcome. There is an option to test if your system can display the game properly, you should give that a try. I have never run into this problem myself so I can't really help. Hopefully you'll find a way to run the game.
