    Looking for a little clarification . . .

We all know that a critical hit is 2X damage and a backstab is up to 5X damage (in SoA). Is this multiplier applied before or after damage bonuses (from class, proficiencies, items, strength, etc.)?

In BG1, the backstab multiplier was applied before the strength bonus (but presumably after all other bonuses). This was done for game balance reasons to keep backstabs from becoming too powerful. I don't know if critical hits were subject to the same criterion.

If the same rule applies in BG2, how would a critical hit on a backstab work? Which of these (if any) is correct for BG2:

    Critical Hits
final damage = (weapon base)x2 + (all bonuses)
final damage = [(weapon base) + (bonuses)]x2 + (strength bonus)
final damage = [(weapon base) + (all bonuses)]x2

    Backstab (assume 5x)
final damage = (weapon base)x5 + (all bonuses)
final damage = [(weapon base) + (bonuses)]x5 + (strength bonus)
final damage = [(weapon base) + (all bonuses)]x5

I don't really know as far as the game goes, but its based on 2e d&d rules, and I'm pretty sure that in 2e critical hit damage doubles the dice you role, and backstabing multiplies the dice or the number on it, but I don't think it does anything to the modifiers. And a critical backstabe doens't double the damage again.

I asked the same question in my post "Backstab math doesn't make the cut."

My then 15th level assasin critical hit, on a x5 backstab with a +3 modifier for strength and a +3 modifier for weapon. I figured the lowest possible damage on a roll of 1 would be...

    (5x1) + (2x1) +3 +3 = 13.

    Apparently I was wrong. A successful x5 backstab on a x2 critical hit + 6 for modifiers gave me a.....9!!! Go figure. I couldn't.

My now 21st level assasin routinely gets over 150 points of damage in a backstab (x7). (Gory bits a-flyin') Same weapon-- celestial fury, same katana proficiency, same strength. My personal best is 212 damage in one strike.

Lets see... 212...broken down so no modifiers are multiplied, same as before...

    (7x10) + (2x10) +3 +3 = 96

No, that didn't work. Perhaps if I add in the modifiers first, then multiply everything (which would have gotten me a minimum of 70 in the first example. Not that I'm bitter...)

    (10 +3 +3) x7 x2 = 224

No, that doesn't work either. Perhaps I accidentally found favor with the gods of random unweighted number generation.
