I was shocked to hear this on Monday, and I think it's very sad. It's just such a freak occurance. While I know it is possible to be killed by a sting ray (about 3 deaths per year worldwide) it's not something that is expected. They have sting rays in petting zoos at sea world and places like that.

Evidently, the ray's barbed tail struck him in the chest and pierced his heart. Despite having a doctor on the boat and him being quickly airlifted to a hospital, he was unable to survive. Not only is it very rare to be stung by a ray, chances are if he were stung anywhere other than a vital organ he would have survived. For example, I don't think anyone dies from being stung on the leg, especially in cases where medical care can be given almost immediately. I can't imagine that you would go to a place where you anticpated coming in close contact with animals that had poisonous stings and not bring antivenom kits with you. However, that won't do you any good if you have a hole in your heart.

I guess the thing that is the most stunning is that he was killed by a sting ray. This is a guy that wrestles crocodiles, picks up poisonous snakes by the tail, and comes in contact with dozens of species of wildlife than absolutely pose a serious threat to one's life. Instead, to be killed by one of the least dangerous species he's encountered is simply bizarre. However, I do note some irony in the fact that he died while filming a wildlife program that was going to be entitled "Australia's Most Deadly Sea Animals". Somehow, I doubt sting rays were very high on the list.

My bad - I thought it qualified as "serious subject matter" and thus intended to put it into the AoDA. Agreed that AoLS is the wrong place. Also, I don't check out Whatnots (or where ever it is) that much, and I never thought that someone's death would be considered a trivial matter.

... especially when the Australian PM could be bothered to say a thing or two about the matter.
