Curious Bug in the Underdark

    I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm stuck in the Underdark on my second trawl through the game. I have destroyed the V*********** thingy that creates the driders, killed the red wizard, talked to Ginafae and had her leave yet when I talk to Malavon, and say I have progress to report, the only dialogue option is 'no progress to report'. I didn't have this trouble the first time I played.
    The only thing I can think to be the cause of the problem is that I don't appear to have talked to the red wizard about the V************ thingy in detail. I don't have a journal entry for it. I think this might be why I can't report progress to Malavon, but it seems strange that this thing, making, as it does, the game incompletable, was not found in testing and is not solved with the patch. Does anyone have any ideas?
    If there's nothing within the game that can be done, does anyone know of a trainer or something that will let me add a journal entry or perhaps recreate the mage woman so I can talk to her about the V**************** thingy?
