damage reduction question

i got mysteria's cloak for my wizard
its desc. says damage reduction 5/+1
what does 5/+1 mean? (i hoped it meant 5+level of pc but its showing an effect of 1 only)

 

Don't remember with the 5, but a guess would be, that it reduces damage with 5. The "+1" means a +1 weapon is required AFAIK

 

Yes you're right Shaitan. The damage reduction is 5 and the damage can only be reduced by a weapon of +1 enchantment or lower. Pretty sure that's how it goes

 

Which means a +1 or +2 weapon will bypass this resistance? Which? I am always confusing this.

For example, 4th level arcane spell Stoneskin confers damage reduction of 10/+5, which means a +5 weapon will cut THROUGH the stoneskin, inflicting normal damage.

Then Mystra's cloak's damage reduction can be breached by any enchanted weapon? This sucks if it is right. Note that natural weapons of tough monsters are consdered magical, at least this was how it was in AD&D rules and BG2.

 

Yes - by any +1 or more weapon! I still consider this to quite good But hey - that's me

 

Other cloaks usually give some deflection-AC (which you also get elsewhere) or some saving throw bonuses. For a char that don't often get targeted that cloak is good for quite some time. It seemed to resist damage from almost all monsters in normal mode, at least for me.

 

A 5/+1 cloak for a mage is great protection against most ranged fire.
