Data Transfer or take old hard drive and install into new pc?

    [​IMG] So, I think I am going to get a new computer, but I want to save all the crap I've accumulated on this pc over the last 4 years (especially my saved games from BG, IWD and NWN)

    Which is the best/easiest way to go? A data transfer or just add the old hard drive to the new pc? Let me know.

    If your old hard drive is bigger than 10GB it's worth adding it in, otherwise it just makes more sense to copy everything off it to the new HD.

    Personally, I have always run with at least two hard drives, typically three and back in the good old days before cd rom drives I always had four. I have always added new hard drives as space started to run short and shunted out the smallest. I belong to that silly group of people who have been upgrading the "same" computer a component at a time for the last 15 years starting from a 286. ;)

    Personally, in your situation I would keep the old hard drive, it never hurts to have a second drive that you can dump/hide files on.

    [​IMG] I did that for the last couple of years, adding RAM and new video card...But it just seems a little cheaper and less of a hassle to just upgrade from time to time.

    It's so much easier to just add in the old drive. That way, when you want to reformat the drive with your OS on, you can use the old drive as storage without having to back stuff up. Plus, it can make a good general dumping ground.

    [​IMG] Is there much potential for losing the data I have stored on the drive when I remove/install it? Since I am not very technical/computer savvy, should I hire someone to do it?

    Not if you're careful. Don't go rubbing your feet on the carpet on a dry day just before you remove it. Don't drop the thing once you get it out. Try not to touch any exposed circuitry, just the metal case.

    Modern hard drives are much more stable than they used to be. As long as you handle it reasonably gently you should have no problem. As long as you don't drop it, decide to play a game of catch with it, put it on top of a large magnet, etc. you should be fine.
