Im trying to make a solo-capable ranger. Has anyone found any ideas at al that work? What stats should you be looking for? What classes should you dual to? I dont mind about roleplaying, I just want a build that works. Only decent idea Ive had so far is a ranger/barbarian...

    Plz help!

Rangers are generally considered to be a bit under-powered in IWD II so trying to solo one would be an interesting challenge. The uber-powergamers out there will soon flood in with their micro-managed builds that you could use.

It depends how much multi-classing you want (because most people will recommend multi-classing to something better after your first level of ranger - but then he wouldn't really be a ranger any more so that would defeat the point of your question).

The most usual multiclasses for someone predominantly Ranger would be Rogue so that you can get Evasion and Sneak Attack. However, I read somewhere else that you want to be a Drow so that would cause you massive multi-class penalties as Drows have either Wizard or Cleric as their favoured class.

Most of the rest of the answer depends on how much Ranger you want to have in your Ranger.

Rogue(2) will give you lots of skill points to spend on skills a ranger needs if you start as rogue. It will also give you evasion and some minuscule sneak attack damage. My party rogue was a rogue(2)/ranger(x) with 14 INT to cover the skills. Funny thing, he also had the wisdom to cast spells.

Barbarian(1) will increase your movement speed and give you a little HP boost. Perhaps the rage of level 1 barbarian could be useful early in the game.

Alternatively, monk(1) for lawful characters. Evasion, movement speed increase, WIS bonus added to AC if no armour. Also has hiding skills as class skills.

Fighter(4) for Weapon Specialisation and some feats. If you're DEX-intense, it's a must have. A +2 to damage nearly doubles it early in the game when you have non-magical short blades. Later in the game it's still useful. Weapon Finesse comes cheap too and perhaps Dash (to max out movement speed).

Paladin(3) could be a good option, especially if you have a positive charisma bonus. Divine Health, Divine Courage, Divine Grace, some minor healing, Holy Avenger allowance, +1 to STR and +1 to WIS from Holy Avenger quest.

A cheap trick is one level of sorcerer to identify items without bothering about knowledge(arcana) skill. The spell Shield might also come handy. Wizard might be a better choice if your charisma sucks as it is in custom among rangers :p
