Someone sent me this via e-mail today. Being an American conservative (os opposed to the European definition) I read it and totally agreed with it. However, other people responded to the e-mail in outrage. Their general theme was that disadvantaged groups aren't starting at the same playing field and therefore they deserve the help they need. I actually do see some merit to that argument, but not enough to invalidate the point. If someone is starting off at an advantage, then somehow, somewhere, or somewhen somebody did something to give them that advantage. Why shouldn't people be allowed to pass that advantage on to their children?

A large part of Jewish culture is children. I don't know a single Jewish person who doesn't hope and plan for their children to be more successful than they are. It doesn't always work out that way, but that is the parent's dream. There are plenty of situations were people have wasted their advantage and others have overcome their disadvantages. Using the e-mail above, it is implied to me that the daughter and Audrey come from similar backgrounds. If one is setting herself up for success and the other for failure whose fault is it?

I once had a long discussion with one of my co-workers. As a CPA we tend to be conservative by nature. His point was he lives in a single family home. He drives a decent car, has a decent life, and saves a lot of money. His neighbor (whose taxes he does) makes about the same amount. They have a boat, a summer home, take extravagent vacations, don't have a nickle to their name, and debt up to their eyeballs. His neighbor doesn't care for he figures when he is old the government will take care of him. Now the question is, who is the idiot and who is the genius? If the neighbor is correct then my co-worker is not enjoying his life to the fullest and the government will take his hard earned savings when he is older to help out the neighbor. If the neighbor is wrong, he may end up on the street. This question troubles me.

Rats, I had a picture here, but it doesn't work anymore. Oh well.

All praise to the mighty Tal. It worked like a charm. See below

OH man those are absolutely priceless

    OK my contribution

Question: You're walking down a deserted street with your spouse and two small children. Suddenly, 3 dangerous looking men with huge knives come around the corner and are running at you while screaming obscenities. In your hand is a .357 Magnum and you are an expert shot.
You have mere seconds before they reach you and your family. What do you do?

    Liberal Answer:

Well that's not enough information to answer the question!
Do the men look poor or oppressed?
Have I ever done anything to them that is inspiring them to attack?
    Could we run away?
    What does my wife think?
    What about the kids?
Could I possibly swing the gun like a club and knock the knives out of their hands?
What does the law say about this situation?
Is it possible they'd be happy with just killing me?
Does they definitely want to kill me or would they just be content to wound me? If I were to grab one of them around knees and hold on, could my family get away while they were stabbing me?
    This is all so confusing!
I need to debate this with some friends for a few days to try to come to a
    conclusion.

    BANG!...BANG!...BANG!

    Southern Conservative Answer:

    BANG!.BANG!...BANG!.BANG!...BANG!.BANG!

Snook, I can see that picture on one machine but not on another. It's probably a difference in Windows settings, or a matter of which antivirus/firewall package you are using.
