I hope i am correct in thinking that there are a lot of Dire Straits fans in the world. So tell me, what are your favourite tracks and why?

    Mine are

1)Brothers in Arms (All time classic, brill when driving in the dark and rain)
2)Money for Nothing (Guitar guitar guitar)
3)Sultans of Swing (nice rythm, just feel good all the way through)
4)Telegraph Road (only 14 minute track invented that doesn't bore me)

BTW, if you don't like them then please feel free to announce your disgust at their very existence.

    He, he:

You got 2 highlights already mentioned:

    1. Brothers in Arms
    2. Money for nothing (and the chicks for free)

    I'll add: Romeo and Juliet.

Juliet says hey it's Romeo you nearly gimme a heart attack
You shouldn't come around here singing up at people like that

Well, congrats! You actually summed up my top4! :)

Here are some others I like, besides the ones you mentioned:
*)Once upon a time in the west. (The rhythm, I guess)
*) Industrial Disease (The music keeps going, the lyrics however make me frown at the end)
*) The man's too strong (changings in the music, 'hard' and soft)

I think Brothers in Arms is my fav album

I have their greatest hits CD, so thats about all I've ever heard from them. I still remember when that video came out for "Money for Nothing" that was really neat at the time :) Is it chicks or checks for free?

Dire Straight is never complete without mentioning "Tunnel of Love".

That song is my all time favorite, have love it 2 decades ago, and still loved it today. DS have sometimes incorporated the guitar sequences of Tunnel of Love and Sultans of Swing on some of their concerts, you should hear them.

Other DS songs I love (no particular order):
    1. Romeo & Juliet
    2. Sultans of Swing
    3. Lady Writer
    4. Brothers in Arms
    5. Heavy Fuel
    6. On Every Street
    7. Your Latest Trick (especially the sax)
    8. Wild West End

    @Sorvo,
"Chicks for free." (it was about how the rockers get their girls for free)

So far away has a special meaning for me, but then it might have something to do with the tragic story of the first girl I truly fell in love with. (not tragic as in death, so don't feel sorry for me :D )

When I am feeling a little aggressive I have a disk with Heavy Fuel, among some other harder classics that I pop in the old drink holder! ;)

The short answer is YES. Dire Straits is/was fabulous. Mark Knopfler is a guitar-god, and I love most of his solo (soundtrack) work as well.

I absolutely LOVE Dire Straits. I sing along with "Telegraph Road", "Romeo and Juliet", "Portobello Belle", "Tunnel of Love", "Money for Nothing", and a whole whack of others when I'm entertaining my year-old daughter. She loves 'em! "Brothers in Arms" has a special place in my heart. You know what I'd like? A biography of the band. Anyone seen a good one?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Dire Straits split up and form Split Endz, or was that Crowded House. I'm a bit confused.

My favourite Dire Straits song it's probably one of their "strangest" one:Calling Elvis.
Great psychedelic atmosphere, nice guitars and keyboards crossed riffs, and a tribute to a legendary artist.

I'm sorry, Silverblade. If it's any consolation, I stopped paying attention after the second post, so you're not the only one. :)

    [IMG] What about Private investigations?
I think the best Mark's performance is in Alchemy, those live versions are absolute incredible, as for me, is the only one who can make a 15 minutes track without boring you.

I recently heared the theme of Local Hero again and bought the CD. Never saw the movie, but I heared it was crap. I'm just glad the music is good. What do you people think of the theme?
