Right now I have the bard eldoth for my identifying needs. He has a couple spells. 2 first level ones and 1 second he can cast. My question is...should i get a better mage than that? Or is he going to be ok and get more spells when he levels more?

I'm in chapter 5 start of baldurs gate. My characters are all lvl 5-6. Party is:
    Main guy is a paladin
    Yeslick(fighter/cleric)
    Coran(fighter/thief)
    Kivan(ranger)
    Jaheira(fighter/druid)
    Eldoth(bard)

I was considering getting quayle and dropping eldoth? Good idea or no?

Also I have run out of other mages. Killed edwin accidentally. Daheira i left out at highhold or something and she's only like lvl 3 i would think when i left her. I dualed Imoen to a mage at lvl 5 of thiefing...but then i could not use ANY of her thief skills, so i got rid of her. Xan I left in the cave with Mulahey's dead body.

So should i stick with eldoth or grab quayle?

If you didn't want Imoen to lose her theiving abilities, why did you dual class her? And getting her mage level up shouldn't be too difficult for you, i'd recommend her as a mage if you really want one. I always found having a mage useful in BG and think that having 2 is even more fun :) .

Imoen will get her thieving abilities back at level 6. Quayle is a good addition as well.
If you really want a mage, I would take Imoen.

The best mages in the game are Edwin and Xzar (or some people say that is Xan:/), both evil alignment. Why did you take Eldoth? I think that he and Quayle are both pretty useless. Quayle has low wisdom and he misses some priest spells...

with patience you can still have Eldoth... bad intelligence though... saves the uses for identify... otherwise Quayle is a very funny charecter with BAD strengh, good, almost great intelligence and bad wisdom for being a cleric...

A BG Party without at least one mage!?

    Unthinkable!

You can go back and get Xan I'm pretty sure.

He stays down there in the mines the whole game I do believe.

    Poor fellow... :p

You don't need a mage to play BG1, though IIRC, Eldoth is another one of those belonging to a "pair" and may give you trouble that way.

[IMG] Mages in BG weren't a total necessity, just a damn useful addition. So while it's possible to do it, magic just happened to help a lot along the way with me. Never liked either of the bards in BG though it has to be said, if I wanted a spell caster, I wanted a spellcaster ;) .

Edwin is the best Mage in the game period. (He gets more spells per day than the PC - if they were a mage)

I think if you want to complete only the BG1, mage is not important. Everything can be solved with good sword(s) and bow(s).

But for the Tales of the Sword Coast mage is neccesary. There are a lot of monster, which can be destroyed only with magic. If you use a bard you may run out of spells...

[IMG] In TotSC I didn't think mages were absoloutely necessary either, just very useful ;) . Of course this comes from the person who used 2 mages regularly :p .

really i think that you should have a mage in the party. it really can be quite usefull when you need massed firepower (example: fireball into 20 or 30 kobolds), and bards do have a tendency to run out of spells kinda fast. My suggestion would be go get Xan if nothing else. he's decent, aside from the fact that he is an enchanter (no evocation spells which is a must have for me). other than that.......good luck. you killed the mage i would have took. edwin i like and if not him, Dynaheir. i would almost just get Dynaheir to get minsc but not always. but since those are out and Xzar is paired with montoron, get Xan. besides he's got that Moonblade which is pretty good weapon for a mage.

[IMG] The pairings never mattered to me, after all you're left with the character you want if the other happens to run off, after giving the party all their items, to show how to take on an ankheg with their bare hands. Or happens to be sacrificed to Shar accidently when falling across the makeshift alter. Me and Vicky were very sorry about it, you see, she slipped and the knife plunged into Khalid's heart. An accident that could have happened to anyone really :hahaerr: ;)

I never had a problem with pairings either. I always liked to go for Xzar. Montaron usually ended up falling on a knife or something. Seven times... I nthe back. Clumsy fellow. That or Xan. I can live without the mass damage dealing spells, though they're more necessary in BG1 than 2 in my opinion. Since you don't have things like emotion to cover for it.

Concerning dualclassing Imoen: into what kind of mage should you dualclass her into? A general mage (rather not) or a mage specialist...only which one?

As for the necessity of having a mage in BG1: They're useful (esp. the Identify spell), but limited because go beyond level 7 and mages aren't THAT powerful at that level.
