[IMG] Argentina; I wake up, get a newspaper, read the news, headlines: People marching to complain about "whatever"; People stopping traffic to complain about "whatever"; Anorher kidnaped: they ask 500 dollars; "Someone" goes on trial, he was convicted for 19 crimes but he's still free; A "politician" goes to trial (again) for spending people's money but another politicians say that they are liers, he was rich before become politician; People gather in front of a factory demanding some food for them; People gather inside McDonnald's (this is true) demanding books and milk for poor people, they were with sticks, covered they head and treathing customers to leave, to not spend their money in this "Bush franchise"(brand?);.
About 2 years ago, some people started to cut streets to protest, to demand, etc., they were called "piqueteros", they had some success back then, so they formed this kind of "union" or syndicate of "piqueteros"; they want the government to give them money because they have no jobs; so now we have almost 10 of this new "unions": ETS, EPO, PUS, PIG, and whatever acronym you can think about it (they mean something like Combative United Class and things like that); they go around stoping traffic (people who go to work) burning tires in the middle of the street, etc., some of them (the leaders) are in newspaper cover everyday saying things like:"judges do nothing, I shove them in my a*s"; "I do what I want beacuse I live in democracy so I can protest the way I want"...
If you offer them a job they don't want it because they say they "have to take care of their sons and the salary is too low and is a disrespect", they never agree to anything, everything is too low for their ambitions, and is easy to read that they just want money and food for free; they think they have the right to go into a store and force the owner to give whatever he sells to them for free and if the owner don't want to, they start to riot around, breaking everything they find in their way; and you see none of them in jail or if one of them is caught, everybody go to the jail to protest because they want free that man and because is unfair that he stays on jail so police (because I don't know what law) free them next day. They (protesters) say that they have the right to protest (I know is a right) but where is the right of the people who had their home/store/car broken because the riot protesters did? Every day is the same; they always are against something; recently government was working on a law to forvid ambulant sellers (a guy with a table with everything you can imagine to sell in the walkways without paying taxes); so back again, a bunch of protesters stopping traffic because of that and because they defend that poor guy's rights; where's the storekeeper right when he has taxes to pay but he has a guy in front of him that sells the same at lower cost because he doesn't pay taxes?
    Well, this is getting long.
Are there people like that in you country? Do people protest for almost everything there?

From what I have heard coming out from Argentina these last years I would have thought that people had every reason to protest...

Well, we don't have anything like that in the U.S., although any protest is legal provided you do it peacefully, and without infringing on anyone else's rights.

The example you give of McDonald's for example, would be illegal in the U.S. You can't go into McDonald's armed with sticks and threaten customers. For one, it's not McDonald's problem if people don't have food. And second, you are infringing on people's rights by threatening them just because they want to buy a cheeseburger.

That's my point Aldet, is why amazes me them saying that they are in the right to protest in any way the want and police do NOTHING about it, and if the do something they are represors.
And joacqin, yes, we have millions of reasons to protest: politicians that do nothing but steal our money; politicians discussing about whatever you can think about without doing something that helps people lack of jobs and opportunities.
Let me ask you one thing: you have a store near where this protesters are, rioting because they didn't get what they want, they come to your store and tear it apart, just because is in their way or because (it happened too) you don't protest with them; and you know what can you do? nothing. 1. because they will be free tomorrow (because they will protest for the freedom of them) 2. tomorrow they come after you just because you expose them.
My point is not the fact that yes, we have so much to protest and claim but I think we don't have the right to be rioting around because someone says or doesn't want to give us something they don't have.

When I was in London, the place was crawling with work-shy layabouts who jumped on the bandwagon to protest about whatever was in vogue at the time. Usually it was some ethereal concept such as 'Global Capitalism' although there was an even more amusing protest when all those countryfolk marched into the city to assert their right to hunt foxes.

That is sadly how things tend to be when everything is crap and people are pissed Sydax. It is not right but it is how things will be until everything is sorted out. Mobs of angry desperate people will take out their anger on whatever catches their eye, sadly it is rarely the people responsible for people being pissed who taste the anger of the mob. Then in every large crowd there is always a small percentage of idiots who are only out to wreck and destroy.

We had a rather violent demonstration here a few years back, and one thing it showed was that the police was not equipped with dealing with it and instead of quenching the ire of the demonstrators they fueled it by acting worse than the worst of the demonstrators.

Here in Poland people who want to work all too often can't find a job. And there are lots of those who don't want to work but want to get social help money. Doubly screwed.

Well...in India people are generally hard-working, though the work : pay ratio is not very good.

I dunno about the protest bit though. People generally don't protest that much here, except for the taxi drivers. And the teachers.

Dont give me that Faraaz. Government employees in any capasity keep going on strikes for whatever reason they see fit all over the place.

In the state of Tamil Nadu the state employees went on a strike for higher pay. So the Cheif Minister decided to break them by employing people on a temporary basis. The strikers would not let any work be carried out at all. Things went very bad. The people of that state responded by completely decimated the CMs party in the national polls (We have a multi-paryt system here). Scared for her chances for re-election she jumped off her high horse and accepted all their demands and retracted all cases filed against the striking state government employees. Now those people who had been expressly employed on a temporary basis went on a rampage demanding that their jobs be made permanent. And guess what!?! They are being supported by the existing employees whose place these guys had taken.

Just yesterday the local muncipal employees went for a mass leave here in my city. Hospitals, bus services, garbage collection, water supply and even crematoriums were held hostage.

Also considering that the left has become a part of the national government for the first time ever, this sort of nonsence will only increase. The so called public servants want the world at their feet and are perfectly willing to disrupt the general publics life for it.
