After you are forced to give up a stat point and lose all of your special abilites you get the ability to change into a stalker. I have heard that is pretty cool but I am afraid to do it. Is it something evil that will cause me to lose rep, Ranger status, or anything else negative? And what characteristics are special to the stalker, like magic resistence etc. Thanks.

That would be SLAYER, not Stalker. ;)
I'll fix the headline too. Others can fill you in on the downsides of staying in the Slayer form for too long.

you'll lose 2 reputation points, nothing more. You could this a powergamers choice, or play by the story and use it with care in fear of letting the evil get you (essence or whatever it is).

  4. I've noticed that my mage died when in slayer-shape. Just 'cause he was in that form! Surprised I was...

well, seems like the taint got you then. You slowly start losing hit points in slayer change as to compensate for some the story that can't be fullfilled as it isn't implemented in the game

Basically the slayer is useless, even for evil players. I never used it for 2 reasons...

Firstly the loss of reputation points (if you have Keldorn in your party this can especially become a hazard).

Secondly is the limited time you have before it starts kiling you. The only times when you actually NEED the slayer form... against Irenicus, Lichs, Dragons etc. you start dying before dishing out the damage that needs to be done.

Absolutely useless and annoyingly the innate abilities you had before are lost.

The Slayer might be 'useless' to some people but, like any ability, in the game it's usefulness depends on various factors including, party make up, enemies being faced, current situation, playing style etc. If you are playing on the easiest settings then the slayer's strengths are less important admittedly but, don't forget he is by miles the best tank in the whole game. To use him to wander in and cause maximum damage quickly is a great ability - if you use it tacticly and efficiency. There are also situations when he is the easiest means of solving a puzzle.

Anyway, for a more balanced view (good and bad) have a look here:
    http://www.sorcerers.net/ubb/Forum2/HTML/002786.html

His stats are as follows (from infinity explorer can't be bothered to load a game):
    Strenght 25 Dexterity 25 Constitution 18 Inteligence 16 Wisdon 9 Charisma 9 Level 20
Hit Point 150 AC Base -4 (don't know if this includes the dex bonus)
Thaco -6 (don't know if this includes the str bonus)
Number of attacks 4 (Mages beware)
    40 magic resistance

PS he is claased as a Lich Mist
