I was awed by a thread that I read below - hearing tales of adventurers 'easily' overcoming dragons! As a lvl 13 Ranger I have tried to take on 'Filkgraig' or what ever he calls himelf, but got whopped! HOWEVER, reading further I heard that Guaths and Beholders had caused more problems for these adventurers ?? Well, I may not be any kind of Dragon Slayer (yet) but I have cleansed the sewers of the 'Eyeless God' and his croonies !! So I guess I feel pretty good ! I haven't been back to see Gaal yet and see his reaction ! I think that will be fun ! I do have a BIG problem with those damn Liches things that pop out of the tombs - I've learnt to pass quietly by and say a prayer rather than go opening those damn things !

Good job, especially if you killed them without the aid of the Shield of Balduran which reflects the Beholders attacks back at them.

[IMG] You MUST open these tombs! If you do not open them, then you cannot complete the infamous Kangaxx quest. To defeat them: Harm and sunray.
Works beatyfully. Use magic to get rid of their combat protections and/or distract them with summoned monsters.

Well as I said I went to kill these dragons( Firkraag and the shadow dragon) at a late point in the game, after saving Imoen. I did the Unseeing Eye quest pretty early and those gauths were really a pain in the butt. Three of them together was almost impossible... In the next game I got cloak of mirroring and they killed themselves :)

You really should go and open those tombs as you will get the parts for Kangaxx, the hardest fight in the game. You also get a nice ring from him.....a great ring by the way....

[IMG] Well = I checked it out - I am lelvel 12 Ranger, not even 13 !! I have been set the challange to find the 3 parts of Kangaxx'x body - or something. But it's the Power Liches or something similar that just eat me for breakfast - they don't even break sweat ! ~~~ I know I will go back and kick butt sometime when, but not yet. At the moment I have completed the shadow theieves quests and they are waiting for me, before setting of on the next chapter (4?) . . . I though I needed to beef up before setting off.

Now I am in a pickle because I am not happy with my party. . . need to get the armourment and balance right before I set forth to meet that bastard Ircenous - or whatever his name is!

    Thanks for the help ppl.

Anybody care to share tatics on dealing with Beholders? I've taken down every dragon except the silver one with 'legit' tatics and beat the hell out of Mindflayers but I can't seem to be able to handle the many-eyed bastards without the Shield of Balduran or the Mirroring Cloak. :D

My favourite tactic for single gauths or beholders (usable for dc fighter-thiefs with grandmastery only :D ) is, oh wonder, backstabbing under magic protection. If that best didn´t die at first hit then at the second.
For groups of beholders or gauths I scout the area first, and then make an ambush with a massive magic attack first (with my thief in visible range to observe spell effect; usually he sufferes a bit from this attack too, but that bearable with proper protection), preferrably using area spells or fireballs to wipe´em out.

I can imagine that summoning elementals could also be useful. Sending a massively protected warrior to the front to make beholders and gauths concentrate their spellcasting on them and using ranged weapons could also work. Ambushs with traps are difficult with these creatures for the use ranged magic and don´t need to follow you.

Syl , don't you mean the shield of reflection,
I had Jaheira kitted with the shield of Balduran and it did nothing but the usual.

He doesn´t. The shield of reflection reflects missile attack back to the attacker only. The shield of Balduran reflects magic attacks of gauths and beholders back on the spellcaster - for a while it´s quite funny to see how creative they are in killing themselves, but I don´t like to use it now for it BOOOOOOOOOORES too much :)

If you ever need help fighting, use the 6th level cleric spell Summon Animals, get 5 bears, haste them, and set them to work. Hopefully they wont get hit by a mass-kill spell. If not, they make short work of just about ANYTHING.

[IMG] Against beholders I give all my party-members increased invisibility and speed them up. Then I kindly ask my tank (Valygar, Yoshi, or whoever has the job) to go in while the rest of the group gives him (magic) fire support. The priests will join the tank after two or three spells to join the fight (and/or give some protectin to thte tank). The least protected mages will only join melee after depleting their spells (typically one will start with mag missiles, the others will first break into the enemies protection; after that one of them will do some fast mm spells, while the others turn to hard artillerie which are slower). The priests allways have spellbreakers to free immobilized friends.

The way I tackled these weee beasties was to stealth a thief (Yoshitomosowhatshisname) and then send in summoned fire elementals. Make sure the main party is well out of sight. I cleared 3 areas out this way - but did not clear the whole area - the plan was to go back and clear them later.
