TeleFragged has posted a preview of Dragonshard. Here's a snip:

The overworld map should be pretty familiar to those who play RTS games regularly. Your town has a limited amount of space for placing buildings, though, so expansion is going to be absolutely necessary if you want a wide range of troops. At least you won't have to worry about the "tech tree": Liquid Entertainment has deemed it an official pain-in-the-butt and have decided to allow any unit to be built at any time. Of course, you'll still want a pretty balanced group of troops with different abilities, but this will hopefully make the game seem a bit more natural and less technical.

Dragonshard includes three tiers of troops that you'll have to manage. The heroes can affect all of your troops on the battlefield in specific ways, and while they don't gain levels like in Warcraft 3, they do get to spend points on new abilities between missions. There's plenty of loot to be had during the game, and your heroes can equip it in an RPG fashion as well. These heroes will even be able to go into multiplayer games with their gear and powered-up abilities.
