i never had a friend who is blind (literally) or know someone who is. and i never really had the chance (yet) to speak with one. out of curiosity i was wondering if blind people have dreams (i mean REM, not the "i dream that someday i'm gonna be a pilot".), and what do they see in their dreams. i'm especially curious about those who were born blind.

anyone who have blind friends care to share.

[IMG] Blind people can still see some light. Apparently.

I think I've read that they either dream in sound or light patterns. I used to know someone who couldn't see but I only found out after about a week, they never looked directly at people and you couldn't really tell from their actions either

I went to school with several blind people, and have known a few more since.
Basically, if you are blind from birth (never had sight at all), you dream, but your dreams have no "visuals" to them. Other than this, they are more or less normal dreams (eg. being in school with no clothes on). One blind friend has told me they dream of falling and flight a lot.

If the blindness occured at some point after the person developed sight, it depends how long ago they lost thier sight. Dreams of the formerly sighted range from patterns of light to "visual" dreams (can see people, objects, etc).

    What Nutimat said.

And those that are blind from birth can (and do) have VERY intense sound dreams. The recurring sounds give rise to their imagination. They think in sounds.

If you've had some coffee mixed with brandy, and you sit down to think about it, thinking in sound is pretty darn neat. Having no visual reference; strictly sounds. You navigate in sound, extrapolate information and conceptualize ideas through sound.

    *cough*

But I still honk everytime I drive by a school for the deaf...

Well, if deaf people can show intelligent behavior, then it is quite possible that blind people can dream

(No, it is not a joke, but I´m a bit to tired now to give a entire explanation about deaf<>intelligent)
