Since we're an eclectic bunch of misfits from various countries, and since most of us enjoy drinking all too much, I was just wondering: What's the drinking age in your county/province/state/area?

Here in Alberta, Canada, it's 18 years old, which is 1 year younger than most other provinces.

In New Zealand used to be 20, but was recently reduced to 18.

Seems like more of a recommendation than a law for the US, as most of the people I knew were drinking by the time they got to highschool. The whole age limit thing just made you have to become more inventive with fake id's or take advantage of naive parents!

We gotta have to suckiest age limits.

Atleast 18 years if you want to have beer.
Atleast 25 and holding a permit if you want to buy harder forms of alcohol at the designated stores.

I never got asked to see any proof of age in the clubs or hotels I've been to.

Ditto here chev. Its supposed to be 18 but if you start at 13 that's pretty normal.

    @Shrikant

Nope, the U.S of A has the suckiest age limit. 21 for beer and any other alcohol. sucks.

Not that it applies to me anymore (and hasn't for 10 years now) but the legal age here in Oz is 18.

BC Canada has the age of 19 to purchase alcohol. Not unusual for 18 year olds to spend long weekends in Alberta.

Define 'drinking age'. Do you mean to buy or the age that you can drink? In NZ has Harbourboy said you used to have to be 20 before you could buy a drink but now it is 18. However, you can be 16, drink and the police won't bat an eyelid. I think it would be when the child is under 10 that the police will start asking questions and send social services to see the parents.

Ireland its 18 of course but we do have problems with underage drinkers. Its more to do with the imature attitude of people towards drinking.

In Spain beer can be bought from outdoor vending machines (I was amazed when I first visited) but they are some of the most sensible drinkers in Europe.

Here in the Netherlands it's 16 if I remember correctly. That's also the age you have to be to be allowed to buy smokes.

I am guessing that people can drink responsibly in Holland?

If the age limit is lowered, teens will not think that its so 'bad and cool' to drink underage thus eliminating the appeal.

It is the same here in Ontario, our 18 year olds frequently head over to Quebec for New Years, Spring Break etc.

I think the drinking age is 18 in Manitoba too but apart from those three provinces I think everywhere else in Canada has the drinking age set at 19.

16 for beer and other mildly alcoholic beverages and 18 for the hard stuff.
