Ok - heres the deal. I have both sets of fake eggs & the key to the treasury. I've managed to enter the egg room & exchange the eggs without being seen although all the guards are aware of my presense. I've even left the temple still without being seen. However, the whole city has become my enemy including Phaere so there is now way I can give her the second set of fake eggs let alone get on with the ceremony & get on to the next level. I've made the exchange I don't know how many times with different characters etc. but always the same violent result.

    HELP

This may be a stupid question but, just to be sure, I have to ask: Is it possible you accidentally did something before the egg snatch that set the rest of the city off? Like maybe hitting someone you shouldn't have with an area-effect spell?

If not, then someone in the temple must have seen you and turned hostile during the egg-snatch operation. It's very hard to get out of the temple without being seen, which does set the city hostile to you. I did it by hasting the party and turning it invisible, then positioning everyone right near the door to the temple. One very fast person runs in, switches the eggs, then takes a potion of invisibility and the whole party heads out the door ASAP. If you stay to fight, and if even one person in the temple sees your party once the egg-room has been breached, you're looking at the hostile-city problem.

Good luck! I hope this helps.

you've got to kill the two guards outside the door leading to the egg room. If they turn hostile and you don't kill them for about 30 seconds they run off and tell everyone. You really dont have to go the stealth route... you can just walk up and kill the guards. The guards farther down the path won't turn hostile unless you attack them.
