I want to play a bard with a grandmastery in katanas or longswords.

I assume this means I have to start as a fighter until I get the proficiency I want and then switch to a bard, right? Is this possible in BG1, or should I just go for it in BG2?

    Additionally, can I multi-class as a bard in BG1?

IIRC you can't have fighter/bard as multi or dual classed character. If you want a good fighter who can cast spells you might want to try a fighter and then dual into a mage.

No, you cannot multi- or dual-class with a bard :( However, when you reach BGII the Blade kit becomes available, which is the next best thing to a fighter/bard :D

    [IMG] Grrrrrrr!

The weapon proficiency slots annoy me so. (See my posts in the BG2 forum and the AD&D forum.)

Maybe I'll just try to learn that Shadowkeeper thing to allow myself to add slots for katanas.

Or switch to a blade in BG2 with my BG1 bard.

There aren't any Katanas or a weapon proficiency for it in Baldur's gate...

Indeed. Choose Long Sword (there aer good ones in BG1) and when yuo export your char to BG2 yuo can change the profiency into Katana's.
