Should I use a human assassin dualed to a mage or a pure halfling assassin? Will there be enough skill points to pour into the assassin and enough time to build a mage to have a excellent thief and mage? Or just make an amazing assassin?

With a full party of 6 people, I imagine there will still be enough points to make a fairly good assassin and a decent mage. It really depends on who's with you and your playing style.

Astro zombie, you dual class by selecting the initial class as a fighter, ranger, mage, thief, druid, or cleric. You must have 15 STR if you're a fighter or a ranger, 15 DEX if you're a thief, 15 INT if you're a mage, and 15 WIS if you're a cleric or druid.

-If you have 17 STR and are a mage, thief, druid, or cleric, you may dual to a fighter.
-If you have 17 STR and are a cleric, you may dual to a ranger.
-If you have 17 WIS and are a fighter, you may dual to a druid or a cleric.
-If you have 17 WIS and are a ranger, you may dual to a cleric.
-If you have 17 INT and are a fighter, thief, or cleric, you may dual to a mage (non-specialist).
-If you have 17 DEX and are a cleric, mage, or fighter, you may dual to a thief.
-If you're a thief and have 17 WIS, you may dual to a cleric.

You can only dual once; you can't dual twice into, say, a Fighter/Thief/Mage. Only humans can dual.

And I know I'm not the assassin, but, oh well. :p

    You can't create a dual-class character (at least I haven't found a way to).
But once you start the game, press "R" to get to your character screen and if:

    a) you're human
    b) have 15 in your current class primary stat AND 17 in your new class primary class (see post above for details)

then you'll have the option to dual-class your character. Just click on the button above the "level-up" button.
If you do not meet the conditions, that button will be grayed-over.

To answer the original poster, I'd go for pure assassin.
If you could pick a kit on your second class, I'd definitely go fighter duelled to assassin at level 12, but well, you can't. :(

I'd personally choose an elvish assassin over halfling, because of the higher strength, higher con doesn't help anyway.
If you're soloing dual classing is probably the best option because of the versatality it offers.
With a 4 or more character party dual classing is not worth the effort.

@astro: dual classing is one of the options which have had the most questions. Just do a search on "dual class" in topics only, you'll get lots of useful info. In one of these posts Extremist has even put up an entire table with all the options

[edit:] I forgot to think about saving throws. Thanks Ragusa for pointing that out ;)

I would go for a pure halfling assassin yet I have to admit that his elven counterpart isn't too bad either. When you reach higher levels your thieving skills will become sufficient in the end.

However, the sad thing about assassins is that they need a back-up thief for everyday business for quite a while (Jan-Jansen is perfect IMO). The assassin is the most fighter-ish thief kit - for quite a while you're only backstabbing and using the poison weapon ranged afterwards. But after a while they become really versatile. The higher bonuses of a halfling help to overcome the lack of thief skills at the start. Of course the elf has the advantage of having str-18 rather than 17. On the other hand the halfling has improved saving throws. Actually it's a question of tase what you choose.

Lately I have been an exponent of multiclassing over dualclassing, and I actually favour single class over dualclass. Multiclassing is nice too though a little limited - on the other hand it's very versatile. When you go to ToB a char dualed early will be relatively weak - but my primary reason is that I just hate to wait for my char to exceed the classes in his first class.

i have always used a elfven assasin since they get bonus to longsword abilities and tht is a main weapon in the game. Also i stay pure assasin since im elf and i have to : ) but even if i was human( wich i never would be ) i wouldnt dual- since i love the assasin and how he plays. although there isnt eenough piosoned throwning dagger in the game as i can never get enough of them without cheating and tht is no fgun so i have to do without them. i thin tht the elf is the best class to play as (nmo offense ) i cant abide those short halflings in the game they always look so wierd and funny( as before no offense intended aqnd i hope none taken )

What do you think about a halfling fighter-thief?

I play a fighter/thief as if he were an assassin, so I love them. I would go half-elf though, as you get full 18 constitution and 18/XX strength (unlike the halfling). Plus, if you bring him in from BG1, you're at 19 strength, dexterity and constitution from the tomes. Deadly.

Yeah, and how does human dual class fighter-thief compare to multi-class fighter-thief?

I played a multi-class Halfling Fighter/Thief and he was a fantastic killing machine.

    - concentrate on hide in shadows for backstabbing
    - give him boots of speed
    - give him the girdle of hill giant strength

    This guy could solo.

Alternatively...(since the original question was about assassins):
I suggest you start as a human mage then dual class into an assassin as soon as possible. Now you can play an assassin who is able to use all the items restricted to mages - mainly scrolls, wands and those glasses of identification.
When your assassin gets cornered by some big nasties, it's handy to be able to pull out a wand of fireballs.
