What, in the entirety of the Fantasy genre, is the long-passed slight which offended these two parties so much as to despise one-another in EVERY piece of fantasy media?

    Where did the trend originate?

Organisms lack the willingness to respect competing points of view.

I, for one, identify with dwarves but would gladly extend a strong, pragmatic hand to a more elegant and artful being. Many would not.

Elves evolved from Nordland myths and were originally semi-divine creatures rather ethereal.

Dwarfs were earthbound creatures often miners and attuned to the earth. Early myths and fairy stories often depicted them as rather difficult, unpleasant persons.

I have no idea who came up with the idea that elves and dwarfs didn't get along. My impression is that dwarfs didn't get along with very many other people.

What I would like to know is who came up with idea that dwarfs were/are Scots, Scots names, fake Scots accent. Bah Humbug!

The dwarves forged the Hammer of Tor (we don`t use the "th" sound in norway, so he is called tor up here), if I remember correctly. That bit is most certainly where Tolkien got the idea that they were great craftsmen. They get a +2 on their craft skill when working with metal as well, in d&d. Also in old norse\icelandic; dwarves were spelled "duergar".

I guess it comes from svartalfar (Viking mythology dark/black-elves a.k.a dwarves) being the underground ugly cousins of the alfar (elves :p ) who resided in the heavens (or at least in a much nicer place...)

Being creatures of the earth, they're good craftsmen living in underground dwellings near precious metals, which also helps.

As the deity of the elves was Frey, the god of fertility and the sun the enmities between these two are understandable, since svartalfar tended to turn to stone under the sun.

Thank you, Iku-Turso, that makes sense. Now can you explain how a Nordland being ended up with a poorly done Scotish accent?

Scotland was invaded by the Vikings and several Norse words remain in Scottish English today (for example, "Kirk" for "Church"; "Bairn" for "Child" (in Danish: "Kirke" and "Barn")), so there is a connection (though I admit it's a rather strained connection;)).

Each book has it's own take on the matter but it usually boils down to a disagreement that gets blown out of proportion & almost brings about the destruction of both races.
Similar to the hatfields & mccoys feud. Both sides blamed the other & noone really knows what or who started it.
The elves say the dwarves started it & the dwarves say the elves started it.

The bad scottish accent is easier to pull off than a bad norse accent...
