We're having a pick-up game today in a few hours and I really need some info, since I don't know wtf gestalt classes are.

The DM explained them as sorta old-style multiclassing; a F/Sorcerer would take the F's BAB and HP while having the S's Will save.

I don't get it. Will someone here please explain it in an idiot-proof manner? Or is what the DM said all there is?

Gestalt is that you basically "fuse" any two classes into one. you get the best bonuses of all of them into "one" class. Its quite overpowered.

    examle: fighter/Wizard

    Fighter:
    2skill/level
    1D10/level
    +1bab/level
    good fort/bad reflex & will
    Bonus feats

    Wizard:
    2skill/level
    1D4/level
    +1/2 bab/level
    good will/bad fort & ref
    Bonus feat + spellcasting

    So Gestalt Fighter/Wizard:
    2skill/level
    1D10/level
    +1bab/level
    good fort & will/bad reflex
    2 bonuse feats + spellcasting

Deyamn. Does it take more XP to get a level or do you just get freebies?

Normally they do XP normal though honestly in a typical campaign if I was DMing I think I would have to raise the difficulty a little bit to keep things interesting.

Gestalts are odd because yes you get two classes worth of stuff but you are still not getting two class levels so you cant really double the CR or anything like that it is quite tricky. Oh and never use them if only some peple get them. They don't seem as overpowered until you compare them to a single class character (though the power lies mostly to versitility).

I see no reason to take, let's say, fighter or wizard levels if you can join them in one, getting a fighter bonus feat every two levels and a metamagic one every five, not to mention full BAB and spells...

By the way, what if someone chose to gestalt cleric and wizard? Or even, horror, wizard and sorcerer, getting loads of arcane spells with the same feats of the Focus, Penetration etc series benefiting both classes? Or the infamous LN monk/druid combo?

Edit: Oh well, I've just googled it and it looks like gestalts aren't supposed to be in the same party with standard characters. There are also some tips on balancing the game for them here:

Yes Gestalt are mostly existing for groups that have few players but wil need a mor e variation of classes. not to be played with normal classes.

    its an "option".

It sort of reminds me of 2E multiclassing, where you had mostly independent progression but still needed to earn the XP (splitting it in half).
