I was watching the world business report late one night on BBC News 24 and i now know the top 5 wealthiest countrys in the world and how much their economy's worth on average :)

    1. USA worth 9 trillion, 100 billion dollars on average

    2. Japan worth 5 trillion dollars on average

    3. Germany worth 1 trillion 800 billion dollars on average

    4. Britain worth 1 trillion 600 billion dollars on average

    5. France worth 1 trillion 200 billion dollars on average

These are the only countrys in the world worth more than a trillion. I was heavily surprised to find that India is actually more wealthy Australia!! Wouldn't think that when you compare New Dheli to a great city like Sidney...
But then, just because a country's wealthy, dosn't mean it's a nice place to live, exept in America's case of course ;)
China's the 6th wealthiest but who'd want to live there!?

Yeah, but don't forget that those numbers represent the value of the whole economy, and it doesn't take into account the population of the country. For example, the total economy of India may be worth more than Australia, but the economy of India is spread over nearly a billion people. The total economy of Australia is spread over less than 18 million people (there are more people than that in New Dehli alone). Hence, countries like India and China may have large economies, but they are far from rich since the economy doesn't sustain much actual wealth on an individual or household level. That's way per capita GDP is the usual method of measuring a country's actual wealth.

Of course, the difference is that the size of the economy is what foreign investors are often more interested in. Hence there's increasingly more interest in investing or at least tapping into the Indian and Chinese economies than the Australian economy.

But Norway is still the best country to live in ;) . USA isn't so high on that list. And as Gnolyn's said, when talking about a country's wealth, GNP is a better to use. Then I think you'll find USA on top, followed by Luxembourg and Norway.

Well i've never been to Norway Mollusken, but it looked pleasent from what i've seen, though it was a nice fishing villiage, i dunno what the towns are like, i'm sure it's nice. But let's face it, isn't Malibu Beach in the USA supposed to be the nicest place to live in the whole world? CA is lush in many places. Well, i dunno. Can't judge a country on it's wealth i guess, all the Eastern block countrys arn't very prosperous but all the Eastern block people on here seem perfectly happy, Croatia looked great on TV.

Depends on how you define nice to live... I think the UN did a study on that, where they took into account how much money people have after paying rent and taxes, how expensive living costs are, welfare, environment.. and canada won, southern canada, if there is such a thing :D

Actually, Norway beat Canada for the last two years, but Canada held the title a long long time. They changed the way they counted points so it doesn't reflect a change in either Canada or Norway- if they had always used the current point system Norway would have been winning all those years.

they did a rather cool thing in the UK - added up the value of all the assets owned by "the country", ie all the roads, land, houses, shares, military hardware, etc etc etc... Problem is I can;t shock you all by remembering how much it was...

So in hundred years the UN is called UE (United Europe. New York is called Nieuw (New) Amsterdam like it was in the old days and G. W. Bush jr. jr. Is sucking up our asses for some extra cash(eewwww).

Well, it could happen, right?? RIGHT??

Oh yes, and we'll start pointing out an axis of evil somewhere around georgia, and then we'll bring out our smart bombs... We just need to start pledging allegiance to that EU flag each morning in school, and we'll be there in no time. The EU anthem is pretty catchy already, beethoven is it? Just a bit hard to sing on your own.. :D

this is a bit off-topic, but i want to take the opportunity.

have you ever been there Z-Layrex?
who'd want to live there? probably over half a billion chinese who are spread around the world (most still lives in china... in their hearts), not to mention over a billion who are living there.

i don't live there but i've been there, and mind you i was impressed. i'm not saying that it is heaven, but there are cities and places in china that may exceed the expectation of most anybody... even to the point of making them want to live there.

Z-layrex, no offense intended, just a piece of my mind.
