I'm having trouble killing Efreetis. As soon as I bring them down to "near death" they turn into a gaseous cloud (like vampires when they die) and then it apparently starts to regenerate, because a little while later the Efreeti pops out again, fully healed. And they keep doing this, even if I bring them "near death" multiple times in a row. It actually made me go "Why won't you just die?!?!"

I found this a bit weird... Any ideas?

Weird. Its never happened to me in my (extensive...hehe) experience with BG2 so dunno about it. What you could try is the universal CTRL+Y!! Guaranteed to work I think. If it doesnt, then its definitely a bug!

Use the 'Wave+4' halberd. It will instantly kil any Efreet in your path. Trust me...

I've always had this problem, and I think it's quite a common bug. It doesn't go away with the official patches, so I just keep bashing the f**kers till they get shredded one time with a critical. I seem to remember that takes care of them.

Efreeti disappearing and coming back healed is no more a bug than a thief drinking an invisibility potion and following that up with a healing potion. It's called a survival tactic.

Efreeti are summoned creatures so if you have a mage around, and they are high enough level, throw a Death Fog or a Death Spell at them.

I've had this happen only in the North Teeth Pass area with the two efreetis guarding the gravestone. One dies easily enough but the other just turns invisible whenever he's badly wounded and then returns, fully healed, a few second later. I was guessing this was because he had access to a few Heal spells.

As was said, the Wave will kill them quick. If you don't have it, or don't have someone who is reasonably good using it, another good trick is inflicting a massive amount of damage to them in one round. A critical hit will work, but usually someone like Korgan or Keldorn can get a hit that does around 30 damage, so if they are in a "badly injured" state, it usually just chunks them.

The way I understand it, that gaseous cloud is actually, as far as the game itself works, a different creature altogether. When the efreeti changes into a gaseous cloud, he is therefore already healed and impervious to attack. When he changes back to efreeti form, it's sort of like a new efreeti. Healed.

They stop turning into gaseous clouds after (IIRC) three times (presuming you hadn't killed it yet). Then they stop regenerating.

The easiest way is to hit them with a death spell. As said above, Efreeti is a summoned monster, so death magic makes short work of him.

Can the Planetar see the invisible Efreeti? He seems to be able to see most invisible creatures in my game and actively attacks them while my party just stand around helplessly.

Do you mean the 'invisible' efreeti or the 'gaseous form' efreeti? I still think that's a bug btw, not a survival tactic.

I've had this problem, and it can be easily solved by hitting it with magical attacks (ie, continuos Magic Missiles + melee). It seems to activate only when he gets heavily pounded by physical attacks.

You can also try killing him as fast as you can.

I meant the invisible form Efreeti.

I didn't have the ability to summon a Planetar at the time I fought the Efreetis so I can't verify if it would work there or not, but several times when I've been fighting mages who cast Improved Invisibility, the Planetar has gone after the invisible enemy and pounded them with his sword. This happens before I'm able to get some spells off to dispel the invisibility.

Annoyingly I'm not able to land a blow on the invisible creature myself or even hit it with a spell even though I know exactly where it is from the Planetar's attacks.
