Start with "Elminster: Making of a Mage" by Ed Greenwood.

As for how good they are, I'd rate them worth reading. They certainly aren't remarkable, but worth the money in paperback.

Actually, they are the only FR books worth reading. At least that I've found.

Yet another old thread awakened by a fool. Sorry for that.
But I´ve read alot in these boards, and have been very interested in Elminster since I first played BG1. And I thought I might aswell order the 4 E books while I order the 3 BGs. But I just wanted some opinions on them from some experienced readers.

Why does it have to be such a pain for me to order from amazon.com? I mean, I cant pay with my card because of security reasons when I´m at the bar. So sending the money in advance is my only option. Not to mention I first have to exchange my swedish kr. This is all to much work for a lazy nonreader to get some books. Is there an easier way?

[IMG] Heh, and another response from me:

I can't really help you with your payment issues but I'm sure Tal or BTA will hop by with advice sooner or later.

I've read 3 out of the 4 Elminster books and here's my rating: 4.5/10.

Elminster himself is a decent enough character in terms of likeability early on. The other characters, however, are either annoying or 1-dimensional.

Elminster gets to sleep with almost every female character in his books, most of whom incidentally wear very little clothes most of the time.

Plotwise, the books are boring at their best moments.

Therefore, I do not recommend them. If you really have to read FR books, get the Dark Elf Trilogy by RA. Salvatore or the Song and Swords series by Elaine Cunningham. They're decent reads and quite enjoyable at times.

IMO, they're the best of the FR books by far.

Payment-wise, I can't really offer any solutions. Amazon operates primarily with credit cards, any other way is bound to be somewhat of a nuisance. I suggest finding some computer you can buy from safely, and using your credit card there.

By the way, if you're from Sweden (or anywhere else in Europe), it'll be cheaper to order from Amazon.co.uk or .de than .com.

Well, I wanted to buy the Elmisnter books just because of the fact that they´re about Elminster. So as long as the parts about him are good I´m game.

Tal > I use my own computer all the time. But I dont have a mastercard because if I did my account would be empty every time I´ve been at a bar. I´ve got problems with drinking and holding on to my money. I tend to become the most genrous person alive when drunk :)
Anyway, joacqin helped me out with a swedish web-book store. I get the books I want for ½ the price and the bill get´s to my mailbox so I wont have any trouble paying either. The setback is that you dont get anything out of it so you can keep the best site on the web running. It is afterall thanks to this site I´m gonna buy the books at all.
