Anyone else thinking that political correctness is now officially insane! I also heard some stuff about things in the Famous Five books being changed. No more Dick and Fanny, but Rick and Nanny. Every 'I say' will be replaced with 'Hey' to 'modernise' them. GRAH! Modernising is not a good thing! Children should have knowledge about the past, not that I even reconised that there was anything wrong with these books when I read them about 7 or 8 years ago. This is a serious butchering of artwork, and a serious abuse of political correctness.

This is true. I have heard of many such changes proposed not long ago, from owls to Irish policemen. To the word 'he' even.

It is a sad state of things that people have become so distant from their past, and twisted, malused things so much, that they have invented offense where before there was none.

The question is, is this due to the coveted worship of the mightiest gods of profit, or is this simply a reflection of our own minds? That we have become so ready to insult one-another, or so ready to recieve it, that we expect it everywhere we turn? Is the thief the one most cautious of thievery? Or have the thieves stolen all we have left?

    Aikanaro one, Manus nill.

Well, Enid Blyton was a child of her time, grown up in the dusk of the british empire - she had some funny notions about foreigners, natives especially (I have the adventure series in mind) - and as everything, the stuff has to be read with in historical context in mind.

As for the names. Well, it's moronic. Plain and simple.

What a coincidence, my sister just moved the whole series of the Famous Five books up to the attic after cleaning her room. Hm, they are actually my books, I don't remember how they wound up in her room... Anyway, considering they were all translated to Slovenian, at least the names in them won't ever be changed. Here's one benefit of translations!

They wanted to do something similar with the Narnia books some time ago, as I recall, and the people revolted against it. There have been a few topics on SP about it.

Aren't we all so damned smug, to be able to feel superior to that ignoramuses of the past? Isn't it nice to look at history through the sanitizing lens of our rose-colored glasses? Bah!

Personally, I prefer the James Finn Garner series Politically Correct Bedtime Stories ;)
