Epic Druid vs. Druid; Animal Companion 3.5

I'm trying to figure out how a druid's animal companion works at epic levels in 3.5 and the DMHB isn't being of much help.

In the PHB, you get a nice table showing how the animal companion improves in terms of HD, natural armor, Str/Dex, bonus tricks and special qualities.

However when I look in the DMHB, all I get for epic level animal companions is "A druid can have maximum of twice as many animal companions has her druid level, as usual."

The PHB says nothing about having multiple animal companions, but instead implies that you only have ONE animal companion who steadily improves as you level.

Anyone know what WotWC is getting at with this seeming inconsistancy?

 

This might be a conversion error. In the 3e PHB it says that a druid can have multiple animal companions, they must have changed it in 3.5e, but forgot about the new rule when writing the DMG.

I've checked mutliple times and 3.5 is on the cover of my book if anyone is wondering.

I wonder if the special edition would have fixed that.

Maybe continuing at the same progression is what the designers had in mind as the druid's animal companion doesn't slow down the a palaidn's mount.

Problem: Druids no longer get multiple animal companions.
Solution: Replace the Animal Companion paragraph with the
following text:
Animal Companion: The epic druid’s animal companion continues to increase in power. At every three levels higher than 18th (21st, 24th, 27th, and so on), the companion gains +2 bonus Hit Dice, its natural armor increases by 2, its Strength and Dexterity modifiers increase by 1, and it learns one additional bonus trick.

By the way, as the animal companion progresses in HDs, does it gain become larger as well?
