Not so much a favorite memories threads, but rather a thread for collecting what you perceive to be truly epic sports clashes. By epic I mean:

    1) The rivals were clearly the best in their league/sport/division, etc.

    2) They were closely matched on paper

    3) They took it to the max, it was so closely and intensely fought that it could have gone either way.

The ones that leap out at me are /

The Thrilla in Manilla, no doubt this one is right up there.

The Summit Series in 1972. Real scare for Canada here, ended by Paul Henderson's famous goal.

Canada vs USSR - 1987 Canada Cup. Greztky and Lemieux were pure magic together. Then again, the KLM line, and Fetisov, were in their prime as well. Went right down to the wire.

Of course, if there's any others, feel free to post them. :)

That would be the one for me. The best-of-three final was incredible -
    • first game won by Canada 6-5 in overtime,
second game won by Soviet Union 6-5 in OT,
third game won 6-5 by Canada, with the winning goal scored (Hawerchuk to Gretzky to Lemieux) with just over a minute left
    Spectacular.
