The Jaheria thread made me think of this. I'm using Viccy for the 1st real full time now and I wonder what you guys fin works best with her weapon-wise. I mean obviously she'll spend most time casting but having a weapon is good...

I've given her girlde of 19 strength and the sling of seeking (makes str bonus add to damage for slings) and she's doing some pretty darn good damage!

 

If she's already got a strength belt, then the obvious weapon is the Flail of Ages.

 

early on you might want to give her the mauler mace,which boosts her STR to 18 (found in copper coronet)

later on, one of those +5 slings and flail of ages for melee, coupled with darksteel tower or something else

 

I think you have it right -- Girdle of Hill Giant Strength and Sling of Seeking (a bug also allows the Sling of Everard to do strength damage). I think her real value comes with spells -- spells and melee usually don't go well together.

You can cast any of the good buffing spells and send her to work with a good melee weapon. I usually like to keep the flail of ages in the hands of a warrior (slow is great), but Viconia can do well with it. She also does well with MoD, Skullcrusher, or any of the weapons from the special merchants.

 

STR belt, Flail of Ages, Crom Faeyr If i haven't given it to Korgan, if Korgan has CF, then Viccy gets MOD, or another powerful mace or flail or hammer

 

Once she gets a STR increasing item (aside from Mauler's Arm), make sure she gets the Sling of Seeking. This sling adds STR bonus damage, and if you're not casting a spell with Viccy, she should be launching a sling stone.

 

I was gonna say... melee weapons for Viccy? You want her out of the way, not in the front line. Drop her in every now an again to cast a heal or something, othwise it's flame strikes and sling from a distance.

 

With STR increasing items Viconia can wear full plate or other heavy armor, which means very low AC (with rings, spells etc.) . She won't get hit that often when her AC is about -10 or below, especially in early game. Defensively she can handle herself in melee, but usually she doesn't hit anything, so I'd give better melee weapons to NPCs with lower THAC0.

Mauler's Arm is a good choice: cheap, available early and nobody else tends to use it (since many other mace-wielders have higher than 18 STR). STR belt is a must, if you don't use Mauler's Arm. Later on Flail of the Ages is my weapon of choice to her. In ToB her low AC doesn't help that much in melee, so I usually keep her in the back. Slings mentioned in earlier posts come in handy, I prefer those that don't require ammo.

Items that increase magic resistance are also useful: for example Shield of the Lost +2 (from Umar Hills) combined with Kaliguns amulet (from Ust Natha?) gives her 65% magic resistance. Amulet of Power gives +5% to magic resistance (not to mention those other great abilities), and I usually don't have many characters that can wear it, so it goes to Viccy.

Sentinel +4 is a nice shield, and Shield of the Order +4 or Darksteel shield +4 are good choices later on. Shield of Harmony +2 can be useful in some situations, since it protects from domination, confusion, and so on - it leaves Viconia available to dispel those spells from others. Shield of Balduran is priceless when fighting beholders, especially when combined with Cloak of mirroring. Helm of Balduran gives some bonus hp and is available even earlier than Viconia. Helm of Brilliance is great when fighting against undead.

Lots of options, which usually means carrying 2-3 helmets and shields - plus other loot if she has the highest STR (= she's the pack animal).

 

No Strength belt on her. You need to get Girdle of Fortitude. Is going to increase her Con to 18 for 9 hours. It is a must for her. Until you can get Crom Faeyr she's quite good with Mauler's Arm.

 

You can just put the Girdle of Fortitude on, activate it, and then switch it for a STR belt.

Gauntlets of Ogre Power are another option. But they usually don't stick around for long. BTW, I only use Crom Faeyr with a character I intend to send into melee... ie: not Viconia.

 

How would I equip Viconia? Hmm... as little as possible.

 

Lol... actually agreed. I don't tend to use her for anything but her spells, because she's a really good spellcaster. Give her whatever spare junk you have. Heavy armor (of course she needs str for it, so maulers arm is a good choice for weapon), a shield, the belt of fortitude is a good idea so she doesn't get owned by cloud kills or fireballs in battle. Other than that, just have her heal and buff and flamestrike.

 

good armor for her is that human skin thingy .... i allways forget the name but it's AC3, 20% magical resistance and +4 to all saves

 

Only if you like cheesy tactics. I don't.
