Most guides I have read seem to favour spells like Fireball. How do you usually deal with friendly fire issues?

I mostly toss fireballs at anemies before sending my melee characters forwards. Softening up the enemies, mostly, before chopping them up.

Friendly fire is no longer an issue when your tank has (improved) evasion or good spell resistance, or preferably both. Aggro a bunch of mobs, let them gather around the tank and drop a fireball in the middle. Ouch much? :p

Other than that, it's also the perfect solution to the annoying packs of archers/casters that stay at maximum range, especially if you pull back a bit so that they form a nice row.

Two deep gnome monks as front-liners.

SR and evasion to begin, with high reflex saves.
Improved evasion at lv9. (For some reason it allows you to pick it as your lv9 feat when you're about to get it for free.)
    Unbreakable SR at 13.
