Just run BG1 and select 'export' from the 'record' menu. (The icon that looks like a head) Then when you run BG2 select the option to import a character. When I did it the file to import into BG2 was called Char1 instead of my characters name. Kinda confused me for a while.

In BG1 export your character to the character file. I assume you know how to do this while playing. Make you got all the best items in his/her inventory. Cloak of Baluran, Ring of Holyness, etc...

Then exit the game. Go to the BG1 character folder, copy the character file, then paste it into the BG2 character folder.

Then just start BG2 and import the character.
    :D

Just so you do not get dissapointed. Do not bother loading up all the good items on your BG1 character. Unless you use a cheat, you lose them all in BG2. I was so pissed when I first started BG2. I spent time towards the end of BG1 making sure I got all the good stuff for BG2 then lost it all.

I understand there is a way to do it but it is IMO a cheat and you have to do it just right. I have never tried it. Now should I try to explain and probably get something wrong or wait for someone else to post it?

I think there's a mod that lets you keep your stuff here on SP.

Yes there is a mod. Not sure which one - never used it. The cheat is to hit the spacebar just at the right time while the game starts - before the cut scene movie begins. Then you can pick up all the stuff on the floor before the game deletes them. But I have never tried to do it, so I do not know how hard it is. For your first time through, just play clean. More fun that way.

I remember that after you hit the space bar you get a black screen. You get rid of all the inventory. You may have to hit the letter h to get the side bars. Think there's sometime else you have to do. Why bother? You're not supposed to have all that great stuff when you start.

    The cheat is very easy.
It has to be for me to do it right every time.

Just hit the space bar that pauses the game when the screen is still black, and then go to your inventory screen.

Do NOT exit it until you've put all of your items at your feet. Don't forget your missles and rings and belts and stuff.
