Im trying to figure out what sort of familiar to have. What have others picked as a favourite? Did anyone have anything really unusual?

    Thanks

I got a dancing weasel :) and I love it!

Pick an animal you like, best way to go. If you don't like hte idea of feeding/petting a familiar, don't pick any or it'll most likely bite ya in the arse or starve to death.

If you want to powerplay, go for a toad, +2 con rocks.

I usually get something small and fluffy, or a raven (they can talk ;) ).

    I had a squirrel.
Think the DM gave me +2 reflex save bonus on that one.

My idea was having a squirrel so he would crack evil guys nuts. Didn't quite work tho.......

Sticking with the normal type familiars is ok, but I always thought a spider monkey would make a really great familiar.

being in a fantasy game, why not use a fantasy creature, maybe a baby dragon, a mini drake, a pixie, or something of that nature.

How about a very young female silver dragon that acted as part familiar, part riding animal (players option 2nd ed kit) for a higher level character (Level 12).

A pixie would be so cool! (ever read the books of Katherine kerr?) but the DM didn't allow it! :(

Anyways do you make a lot of use of your familiar?
A cat is also quite cool!

You are probably not evil, which is unfortunate because you could have taken an eyeball, a very small beholder :D

As for a good/neutral mage, a hawk or raven are cool, perhaps a giant wasp? Try out some insects, or arachnids.

I, myself, have a raven, although everyone I play with, including me, never remember that I have him. Quite sad really.

I am assuming you are talking about 3E here. If you aren't sure which familiar to get, try to think of the bonus you want to get. Want a better Reflex save? Get a cat or a fox. Want mor HP? Get a toad.

If what is in the PHB doesn't catch your eye, check out the Tome & Blood book, the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, or the Magic of Faerun books. They have some more info on that.

Still nothing, work with the DM. Me, I got a racoon familiar which boosted my Pick Pockets by +2. But I didn't really care about that. I wanted the racoon so he could manipulate objects so he could set off traps and defenses in my party's base.

I've always had a Cat. I expect they are very useful to Magic-user/rogues with their +2 to move silently checks etc.

Oh yes, my time to shine! My sorceress had a familiar that was both useful and fun, until she died. It was...

    The Blink Monkey.

Blink 1/day with all gear, can wear five rings (1/hand and tail), bracers of defense as armor... he was great. Plus, he could do a ranged attack and fling poo! My DM is a psycho, is case you haven't noticed. It was either a blink dog or a monkey, so I said, "Blink monkey." I've single-handedly turned a serious campaign into a joke.

Not exactly a familiar, but I once had a Ranger with the rider kit who had a stag as his mount. The DM let me use him as a guard animal and in battle, and he was pretty effective, too! If the ranger ever went down, the stag would guard his body until a healer could come along.

My friend's DM let him have an Earthworm. It gave him plus 5 hp but it was useless in combat.

I usually go for a combat orientated familiar.
