I don't usually play a mage or sorcerer but I was thinking of starting a new game as one. Do familiars grow cause the one in the adventurers mart seems pretty big? Are they worth creating and preserving through the whole game. I do plan to continue to T of B. Will this add anything to that experience?

Nope. Familiars in BGII is simply just an extra feature to which you can talk, but they can't really do anything worthwhile as in NwN (though iirc you CAN make them fight your enemies, they're pretty weak, and will die quickly - thus you will loose a constitution point). They do not grow, neither in size nor lvl. It won't really add much to the overall experience of the game (they are much like the Lim Lims in PS:T - you can play with them, pet them and ask them a few question).

No they don't grow or level. There are different familiars. What familiar you get depends on your alignment. Some are more useful than others with things like stealth, pickpocketing, invis '10, glitterdust, etc. The best thing about them is they give your PC more hitpoints (you get 1/2 of the familiars HP added to your PC)...but be careful because if the familiar dies you will lose hitpoints (more than you had before you cast the familiar iirc) AND one point of constitution...VERY bad so keep then safe! You can also put them in your backpack to keep them safe. Also if you have a sorcerer DO NOT learn the spell find familiar as you will only use it once...use a scroll instead. Whenever I play a mage PC I always get one just for the hitpoints....they are worthwhile...just keep 'em in your pack.

PS-there is a cheesy way to 'abandon' your familiar without losing the HP if you really need that one backpack slot. It can also be exploited to give you MANY hit poits.

Good advise. If I do create one I will keep it in the backpack. Also great advice from the sorcerers point of view. Cheers

Yes, I would never bother actually having my familiar do anything other than sit in my backpack as he is bound to get squashed fairly quickly and nobody wants to lose 1 point of constitution.

Yeah, my familiar just sits there until I need to use the space. I've got an imp this time. :D Very different to a boring old rabbit.
Sometimes I just cast the scroll the, uh, *bugged* way even though I'm not a mage etc.
    :D
