I read a secret items list on gamefaqs and it said you could find your 'father's helm' in candlekeep by not killing anybody and stepping through a 'portal the mages create to protect you.'

this is the first time i've heard of this and the description of the procedure on acquiring the helm was EXTREMELY sketchy.

i'd appreciate any help in this matter.

Nay.... Haven't ever heard about it and also haven't seen the helm in an item database and it's also not in Gate Keeper. I think it's all a joke.

Well the helm of alignment change isn't mythical, but you can only get it by killing the Demon Knight in the lobby of Durlag's Tower.
As for this "Father's Helm", it's definitely something made up. It doesn't exist, not under that name anyway.
