Only read the first one, but it's most probably Lord Eddard Stark although I like his bastard son nearly as much and his brother, the Guard member quite a bit too.

Arya, her parts were always the most interesting.

I cant remember the guys name now (I havent read the books for a while) but my favourite character was the guy who gave Anya that coin (I think he was an assassin (faceless man?)) and also Sandor Clegane.

I've only read the first book (the rest haven't been translated to swedish), but my favourite is definately Lord Eddard Stark.

They're all so bloody good it's hard to pick. I'd have to go with either Jon Snow or Dany.

That should be Petyr Belish... He is a nice character... I almost like him, which is very unlikely for my overall opinion about "aSoIaF" and George Martin

I just really like Jaime Lannister, the classical knight in shining armour turned human. he is so interesting, dashing, strong fighter and warrior but really dim as a stone.

Joc, I don't know how dim he is. I think the spotlight of the story is shifting to him. I hated him in the first book, love/hate relationship in the second, and really liked the way he turned out by the end of #3.

My favorite has to be John Snow. I've been cheering for him to end up ruling the whole place, though I doubt that will happen.

I also like the 10 year old girl whose turning into an assasin. Interesting way to develop a character.

I wouldnt like to say that Jamie is the smartest fella around, he is a person that has all his life been formed and molded by other peoples expectations and demands of him. It is first now that he opens his eyes. Right now I think he is the most interesting character. Jon Snow is the hero, I think we all more or less want him to come out on top, preferably with Daenerys at his side ;)

But actually I do not think human squabbles is really what the main story of Martin's epic tale is about. It is about the gods and magic and even there we dont know who the good guys are. Martin play with sides and 'goodness' is his greatest strenght in my eyes. Heck, up to now it is really only Cersei Lannister that has been a true bad guy among the main characters. Joffrey was just a child and Tywin was just your average pragmatic lord, not really a supervillain.

Another person in the books who is at the core of much of the nastiness in them is the mad king Jaime slaid, the act that made everyone distrust him.

I just finished "A Storm of Sword" and throughout the series so far, I've liked Jon Snow. I really like Barristan the Bold a lot as well though, but I have no idea why. :D

It's not that Jaime is not intelligent. He is smart, but in a different way. I think Tyrion describes him and Cercei as having 'low cunning'. Just look at the way that he acts on the trip with the she-he knight (Bridgette?). I think if you read the first book, then Stark and Jon Snow are the best. If you get to the second book, then Jon and Arya, with a small likeness towards Robb. Then in the third book, Jon followed by the Targean princess (I forget. it has been a while), with Tyrion and Arya. The fourth book then I would have to say Tyrion. His character is developed to it's fullest, and it's more about politics than battle. I also like the way that they are leading to something big with Bran.

Anyway, the best characters are obviously Tyrion, Jon and Arya. They get the publicity.

Joc, I think you're right. Jamie is just now opening his eyes. I think he shut his brain off after he became "King Slayer", and is now re-engaging the world.

Bran is interesting. I'm also wondering what the youngest boy will end up doing.

When does Feast for the Crows come out again??

Sandor Clegane's interesting in that he started off the series as a complete and utter bastard but seems to be showing the better side of his nature now.

Favourite character has got to be Oberyn Nymeros Martell, the Red Viper of Dorn. Shame he (spoiler!) got killed in book 3 but he was brilliant for what bit he was in it.

Did anyone catch the latest Dragon Magazine? I flipped through it yesterday. Tons of info on George RR Martin and his world, including character stats and Ice Wall campaign.

Unfortunatly he let on that the next book is taking him awhile to finish :wail:

I got Dragon magazine and there's some qite interesting articles in it.

    [start of self-indulgent moan]

Pity it's taking him so long to finish the fourth book, though. I mean, he didn't exactly rush himself with the first three but I'm beginning to wonder if I might be claiming my pension for the next one comes out! (I'm 29 by the way.)

    [end of self-indulgent moan]

You could use D&D to create you own if you really wanted to, I bet it is flexable enough to do it.

And Jon Snow would have to be my favorite.

It's spelt Jaime, as in James without the 's'.

You might want to get rid of that spoiler. Tal might get annoyed.
