I've had an idea for a while now about how a PC could carry certain kinds of provisions with them on a long trip, but I'm not sure exactly what the creation might entail. I don't have ready access to the current D&D manuals, so forgive me if my idea is listed on, say, page 135 of "Basic Adventuring: How to Wander Without Looking Stupid".

Since magical items (of all types) in D&D are rather common, finding/making a Bag of Holding probably isn't that hard, relatively speaking. Once you have the BoH, you'd need a small block of (for lack of a better term) ever-frozen ice. Place the block into the BoH, then put something perishible (meat, perhaps?) into the Bag. You'd now (theoretically) have a portable refridgerator, so that if something needed to be kept cool/cold, you can just put it in there, then take it out & roast it when you set up camp.

Does this sound like it'd work at all, and if so, how might one go about getting the materials/spells/etc. together to make it? Thanks in advance for all info.

That should work I think, if the cube radiated cold to its surroundings. The radius should be enough to fill the entire bag. Technicalities aside, I don't think that I've ever needed to keep something cool, in ANY game...

Though mentioning that cube of everfrozen ice makes my Human Fighter want one. Always have a cold ale handy. Excellent! :p

Got any stats etc for that cube? In which book can I find it?

I figure that the cube would be roughly 6 inches on a side, since we don't want the stuff inside getting too cold. A possible place to get it would be on the Elemental Plane of Ice, perhaps an Ice Salamander egg that is given for performing some task for said salamander. I don't know if the spell Permanance would need to be cast on the egg to keep it cold, or if it'll stay that way on its own. Since Ice Slamanders on their own radiate cold, their eggs might as well.

There's a magic item (which only costs 2,100 gp), IIRC called the ring of warmth. It gives you cold resistance 5 and makes you "comfortably warm".

I don't think it's unreasonable to create a similar magic item that gives you fire resistance 5 and keeps you and your gear "comfortably cool".

True, but there's a difference between "comfortably x", which is dependant on the wearer's preference, and cool/cold enough to perserve stuff like milk, meat, cheese, etc. Good idea, though.
