this my sound stupid of me but
    i have a fighter/thief in my party
lvl 3 thief lvl 2 fighter
    i having trouble backstabing people

Backstab - Click on the mask icon with your thief (stealth), get behind the victim's back and click on him...DON'T click on the weapon icon, just move the mouse over the victim.(i read it tried it still no help)

ok this is what is happening
when i i move the mouse over the victim
if i click on him i just talk to him
if i don't click nothing happens

i think i know why i can't backstab but im not sure so im asking you guys
    1. He's wearing armor (shadow)
    2. im not hostile with the person
    3. wereing a large shield and a scimitar
    (i think 3 is important
cuase i thief can use them)
Can any of my reasons be the problem

I really want this backstabing to work cuase in battles right now my fighter are getting killed just chargeing from the front i only have 1 person with a bow so my range attack isn't so good and i have 1 mage
I have 5 people in this party 3 fighters
a bow ranger and a nekromancer Mage
How am i doing with my party too

Dang thats a long post :D

Seems like you're main problem in this instance is that you are trying to backstab someone that isn't hostile. A non hostile person won't have an attack cursor over them naturally, only a talk cursor. Hence when you go to backstab, instead of attacking, you merely talk to them. Not good. I believe you can still backstab a non hostile if you are in stealth mode (note: your character sucessfully hides in shadows and is transtparent, not wearing any armor above studded leather except for Mitheral Chain +4 of course), walk over to the potential victim, quickly switch to the attack cursor while standing right beside them, and immediately attack. Shadow Armor is fine. You can backstab with a scmitar I'm pretty sure; at least that's what I had Coran using in my game. It might now have given me the backstab multiplier though; I forget. I don't know about your large shield as my fighter/thief never used one. I don't think it causes problems, because if it did, you wouldn't be able to even hide in shadows wearing it.

[IMG] DarkHunterz, are you going to read the bloody board rules already or do I have to ban you? You've been told numerous times already, and still no effect. Or do I have to spell it out that NO, YOU CAN'T USE "l33t" SPELLING IN HEADLINES EITHER?

Are you so blind you haven't noticed I've changed 2 of your headlines in that lame style so far? I thought that you'd get to your senses without having to tell you that, but obviously not.

Just to agree with Crawl about the dialogue problem. Of course if you to try to override the dialogue option by clicking on the attack icon (the sword icon in the bottom left of the screen) you will drop out of the shadows if you are not quick enough. Also I think you have to click the attack icon twice (it turns red I think) to override the desire to talk to a non-hostile character. To help do all this without running out of time, try moving your thief as close as possible to the enenmy then pausing the game. While paused double click the attack icon the click on the target, then unpause.

For more hints on overcoming any backstabbing problems, have a look at theses (they are BG2 related but the same principles apply):

I never played with a Scimitar, for in BG1 only Drizzt has two but I don't kill him and you can't specialize there in Scimitars so I wonder, is it possible to backstab with a scimitar and a second thing, if it is possible, maybe the creators didn't build in the backstab-possiblity for a scimitar?

it should have been added drizzit can be killed by a lvl 3 party so i think it logical that they would have, oh, and in bg1 the scimtars are considered longswords
