Wow man, they're so much better than straight fighters.

I replaced my fighters with gnome fighter/thieves, and enabled the 3e flanking rules. OMG they rule in hand-to-hand combat now!

I prefer Halflings than Gnomes, for the 19 dexterity, but yeah, they rock really. I actually prefer them more than the straight Thives, who are ****e and lacking, but I don't daresay that they are better than the straight Fighters. The straight Fighters are the best fighting class. The two combinations of dualclassing Fighter with Cleric or Druid at level 9 are equally powerful.

    What does "****e" mean?

I agree with kf here, and like gnomes better than halflings. I'll take an 18/anything STR and an 18 DEX any day over a 17 STR and 19 DEX.

S*ite is the scottish way of saying s*it. I kinda like it... ;)

oh, man it's matter of taste in fact. Nothing against that. I'm just more used to see my fighter/thief as a halfling, rather than a gnome.

Dwarves are better. 18/00 str, 20 dex (cat's grace), 19 con. And maybe one halfling for the helm of the trusted defender & girdle of stromnos.

But F/M/T are even better. Mirror image + blur + ...

Yeah, but for a solo or combo. Otherwise I won't use them.

Both triple classes, F/M/T & F/M/C, can only be used with anywhere close to their power in solos to trios. A party with anymore party members and the triple class just does not get enough XP, specially the Mage class.

I disagree, Shrikant. I typically use a FMT as an archer. He starts with a 19 DEX and can pick any lock and handle any trap in no time. He almost never misses with his longbow and his Mage class is only used as a last resort.

The character is really only useful because he's a support guy, but that's cool with me. I've never been a huge fan of Mages or Thieves anyway, and the Thief class maxes his usefulness (the way I play them anyway) around 7th or 8th level.

If you're going to be flanking, the reason I said I like Gnomes best (in this game) is because of a neat little helmet you can purchase in Khuldahar for these guys. That, plus an 18/xx STR really packs a punch!

Klorox: then why not make him a Fighter/Thief ? progress much faster in both classes, and is better at backtabbing, more hitpoints, works better as an archer, and faster at getting the locks open ? and can still be gnome i think... ?

running a party with 2 characters both tripple class: FMT, and FMC is equal to playing a party of 6 character singleclass if you compare level progression. 6 persons will have alot mor actions to do each round, and can shoot more arrows, hack more goblins etc. So its not always a bonus to be less people on the team either.

I just don't feel that I need a better Thief, nor a better Mage. And this character rarely misses with his bow. I'm not a fan of backstabbing, so my angles are pretty much covered.

I also feel like I need to add that I really dislike single-classed Mages in this game. I feel like I'm "wasting" them because I can never find scrolls fast enough for them.

My FMT still outcasts my Bard, and that's saying a lot. Those two make a great casting combo for me! :)

Out of curiosity...why a Gnomish or Halfling F/T over an Elf? Is it purely cosmetic?

Exceptional strength, 19 Dex, bonus with Bows and Long Swords...they seem like the best choice. You only get 17 CON, but big whoop. If that's a problem take a Half-elf and take a -1 to missile weapons.

    Discuss.

There's an awesome helm early in the game (Kuldahar) that only Gnomes and Halflings can wear. The +3 AC bonus (IIRC) is ridiculous. Exceptional strength is a big bonus, but I go Halfling for the uber thieving skills and the 19 DEX.
Same applies to Gnomes as Half-elves, but Gnomes get the helm too.

That's right - I forgot about the Trusted Defender. But is that it? Is there any other reason? Do you happen to have the actual racial bonuses handy to compare? Maybe a linky - I'm curious what the dif is in IWD.

Aren't there other gnome or halfling specific items to be found in IWD or HoW? I can't remember...

    Okay...

Dwarf: +10 Open Locks, +15 Detect Traps
Elf: +5 Pick Pockers, -5 Open Locks, +10 Stealth
Gnome: +5 Open Locks, +10 Detect Traps, +5 Stealth
    Half-elf: +10 Pick Pockets, +5 Stealth
Halfling: +5 Pick Pockets, +5 Open Locks, +5 Detect Traps, +15 Stealth

The totals are in this order: Halfling (30), Dwarf (25), Gnome (20), Half-elf (15), Elf (10)

    But adding in the Dex adjustments for 19 or 17 vs. 18: Halfling (50), Elf (30), Gnome (20), Half-elf (15), Dwarf (5)

As you can see, Halflings rule the roost thief-wise.

EDIT: Let's take a quick look at Rangers and Bards while we're at it.

Rangers need stealth. A Half-elven Ranger has a +5 edge over Humans, while an Elven Ranger with 19 Dex gets +15. Elves are clearly superior for the stealthy Ranger, but Half-elves & Humans get the extra HP, and Humans can dual-class. A simple choice to make that depends on what you want to do with your Ranger.

Bards need pick-pocketing, and this one is very clear-cut. Even Human Bards can't dual, and a Half-elven Bard gets +10; the Half-elves win without a doubt.

You know if you enable this on a 2ed game its bigtime cheating. The hitpoints system in 2ed differ alot from 3ed rules. And if you get sneak attacks like in 3ed its insanely overpowered, so no wonder your fighter thieves rules bigtime. Sorry to bitch but thats the way it is hehe.

you cant use it multiple times on a single creature I believe that the rules say it only works once per victim.
