    [IMG] Hello,

I have been lurking for a month or two while going through BG1 for the 1st time.

I am stuck in the fire room in Durlag's Tower. I have already done the slime, ice & air rooms. I can not, for the life of me, kill the phoenix chickie before she draws her bow. I enter the room, move my main character a few steps to get one guard to appear. I fire +2 arrows by Kivan & Imoen, +2 bullets by Branwen, and have Dynaheir throw some magic missles at him. It does damage the guy but not kill him close to the phoenix chickie. I have found out to my despair, that fireball and arrows of detenation help heal them a little.

I have searched on the phoenix guards but the answers deal with getting teleported out to the chess game.

I must really stink at this game because it is kicking my butt. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance.

I got this from the walkthrough here at SP.

    10) Through the last door are two Phoenix Gaurds. Whatever you do, do not bring the one with a bow into view. Her arrows detonate into fireballs. Instead, kill the one with a sword and shield at a distance, so that the party will be beyond the range of his fiery explosion when he dies. Arrows of Ice and the Wand of Frost will work well.

There is a point to saving the Phoenix Guards for last. If you kill the one with the sword and shield, you’ll be immediately teleported to the next destination without having to fight the one with a bow.

    What Chas said.

But if you want the XP the female is easy to kill.

I'm not sure why you can't... Bad luck?

One strong character with very high fire res (spell + ring) goes in deep to draw them out and the rest blast away with arrows.

One round normally kills her for me.

    @Aces:

I am not really a computer gaming person so... I stink.
In fact, this and BG2 is are all the computer games I have right now. I was raised on Atari 2600 games when I was small. I used to love pen and paper D&D in my younger days and saw BG1 and BG2 at Comp USA and had to play.

I have to say I had to delay playing this game for a while (2 weeks) and was doing ok. But I picked it up again tonight and after the 15th or so try you start to get frustrated...

@Chas: Thanks for that. Which walkthrough did you get that info from? I have been peeking at Dan Simpson's walkthrough for help but his does not mention the ice stuff.

I am pretty sure it is the one from Dave Milward listed under the Walkthroughs.

I took the fire room first.

I ignored the swordsman and hit the archer with magic missiles, arrows of ice, +2 sling shots and a +2 throwing axe - instant death.

I had to kill the swordsman several times over and, on the last occasion, he exploded. I used up a lot of my healing sorting this out so am glad not to be playing chess afterwards. (Keeping him at bay with a Monster Summon might have worked, but would be tough on the poor monsters.)

I am at about the same place as you are - just the ice room to go as it does less damage and uses not too much magic.

    Hint:

    Save the slime for last.
No items are dropped so you don't lose anything.

True, but the value of the pelts is not important as I have more cash than I can spend.

Where can I get useful items in the 100,000 G.P. Range?

I am starting to believe I might have the bug mentioned in older posts. I have started from the begining of this level (fireball room) and started with the fireroom first this time. Does one need to kill the archer before she draws her bow if you try this room first? Previously I had started with the ice room first worked my way down to the fire room.

One of the heads in the coridoor does sugest that you should not let her shoot.

Those heads do give useful advice.

When you enter the fire room, immediately start attacking the archer, after she dies, the room has been cleared.
Because when you go for the Phoenix Guards, they keep respawning.
This won't be easy, but it's the best way in my opinion.

    Ancient Galatian

The Phoenix Guard(s) respawn a few times but on the last incarnation explode on death. Then they do not respawn. You can continue if you survive the blast.
